{"id":2056,"date":"2007-08-02T16:46:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-02T22:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/gop-lawmakers-jump-into-health-care-debate\/"},"modified":"2007-08-02T16:46:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-02T22:46:00","slug":"gop-lawmakers-jump-into-health-care-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/08\/gop-lawmakers-jump-into-health-care-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP lawmakers jump into health-care debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the face of mounting momentum to create universal health care systems on the state and federal levels, a group of GOP state lawmakers from the eastern side of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> are touting a private plan they say will help people without insurance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the federal level, the House has approved and the Senate is debating expanding funding for a children\u2019s health insurance program that President Bush has threatened to veto if it exceeds $5 billion \u2013 which the final version likely will. In addition, the Democratic presidential candidates \u2013 including Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> \u2013 are talking about reforming the health-care system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On a state level, the lieutenant governor and other Democrats are hoping to make the creation of a universal health-care system the main policy issue considered during the 2008 legislative session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This afternoon, a group of Roswell-area Republicans sent out a news release announcing that, tomorrow, they\u2019ll be talking to the public about a private program to help the uninsured save money on prescription drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The program, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.togetherrxaccess.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Together Rx Access<\/a>, is a partnership of a number of prescription drug companies that offers discounted drugs to qualifying people who aren\u2019t insured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is a private-sector solution to a public problem,\u201d said Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=329&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Nora Espinoza<\/a>, R-Roswell. \u201cThis program will help provide meaningful assistance to hard working people who struggle to pay for needed prescription medications every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe must provide meaningful help to those who are in most need in our communities.
