{"id":2041,"date":"2007-07-31T13:46:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-31T19:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/mccamley-attacks-pearces-vote-against-farm-bill\/"},"modified":"2007-07-31T13:46:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-31T19:46:00","slug":"mccamley-attacks-pearces-vote-against-farm-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/mccamley-attacks-pearces-vote-against-farm-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"McCamley attacks Pearce&#8217;s vote against farm bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rq-Rv0uF3fI\/AAAAAAAAC-g\/SZ0lMY9cxtM\/s1600-h\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rq-Rv0uF3fI\/AAAAAAAAC-g\/SZ0lMY9cxtM\/s200\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5093449954371165682\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Democratic congressional candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> is criticizing U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., for voting last week against a farm bill that included a provision designed to combat the production of methamphetamine.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Combating meth use is one of Pearce\u2019s often-stated goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:h.r.02419:\" target=\"_blank\">House Resolution 2419<\/a> was approved last week on a vote of 231-191. It included a number of provisions to help fund and sustain <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It also included $15 million to encourage farmers to use fertilizers that don\u2019t contain ammonia. A component of meth, ammonia is often stored in large tanks on farms and stolen by meth producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rq-RwEuF3gI\/AAAAAAAAC-o\/6YF8cYARl5s\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rq-RwEuF3gI\/AAAAAAAAC-o\/6YF8cYARl5s\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5093449958666132994\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cSteve Pearce\u2019s priorities are not in order,\u201d McCamley said in a news release. \u201cHe says he supports anti-meth efforts, but on this big vote he voted against fighting meth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019m awaiting a comment from Pearce\u2019s office and will add it to this posting later as an update if he provides one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman has said the bill \u201cstrikes a reasonable balance in allocating benefits among our nations farming and ranching families who grow a safe and secure supply of food and fiber for <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> and the world. \u2026 Overall, this bill directly benefits <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s taxpayers because it is fiscally responsible, spending $20 billion less than the prior farm bill. That is real reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill must still be approved by the Senate and signed by the president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley said he was surprised by Pearce\u2019s decision to vote against the bill, given the benefits some of the bill\u2019s measures would have for <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe need a change of leadership in this congressional district,\u201d McCamley said. \u201cThis bill was good for local farmers and ranchers and it stepped up the fight against meth. It is good for New Mexicans and I would have voted for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley is one of three Democrats fighting for the right to take on Pearce next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:55 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce\u2019s office pointed me to a news release from last week stating that he voted against the bill because it \u201cenacts enormous tax increases and will cost New Mexicans thousands of jobs.\u201d He said the good provisions in the bill are \u201ccombined with fiscally irresponsible tax hikes that would damage the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> economy, put people out of work and reduce our ability to become energy independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce also said the bill will hurt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a> because it raises taxes on foreign companies.
