{"id":2030,"date":"2007-07-27T15:22:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-27T21:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-within-striking-distance-of-obama-in-iowa\/"},"modified":"2007-07-27T15:22:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-27T21:22:00","slug":"richardson-within-striking-distance-of-obama-in-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-within-striking-distance-of-obama-in-iowa\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson within striking distance of Obama in Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqpigUuF3VI\/AAAAAAAAC9Q\/awpN6yMu3-k\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqpigUuF3VI\/AAAAAAAAC9Q\/awpN6yMu3-k\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091990636153134418\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A new poll released Thursday has Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> at 11 percent and within striking distance of the third-place <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> in Iowa, the state that hold\u2019s the nation\u2019s first presidential nominating contest on Jan. 14.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Eleven percent is the highest <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has climbed in any independent poll of likely <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> Democratic primary voters, though a poll <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/guvs-campaign-claims-hes-at-13-percent.html\">conducted for his campaign<\/a> a month ago had his support at 13 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The news that Richardson is within striking distance of the third-place candidate in Iowa comes as Richardson has recently passed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> to become the third-place candidate in <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/richardson-moves-ahead-of-edwards-in-nh.html\">the newest poll<\/a> in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The two states are the most critical to race and are the focus of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/politics\/13763159\/detail.html\" target=\"_blank\">newest poll<\/a>, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.research2000.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Research 2000<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">KCCI Channel 8<\/a> in Des Moines, has Edwards at 27 percent, up 1 percent from the group\u2019s last poll in May; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> at 22 percent, down 6 percent from May; Obama at 16 percent, down 6 percent from May; and Richardson gaining 4 percentage points from his 7-percent support in May. Some 16 percent were undecided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll was conducted July 23-25, surveyed 600 likely <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> Democratic primary voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis poll is consistent with the momentum we\u2019re seeing on the ground in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d Richardson Campaign Manager Dave Contarino said in a news release. \u201cThe more <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> voters get to know Governor Richardson, the more they like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Guv in third place in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Another poll released Thursday has <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s support at 9 percent in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanresearchgroup.com\/pres08\/azdem8-702.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">American Research Group poll<\/a> has Clinton at 39 percent, Obama at 25 percent, Richardson in third place and Edwards in fourth at 8 percent. Some 16 percent were undecided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city>\u2019s support grew 6 percent from February, the last time the company surveyed <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Obama\u2019s grew 1 percent, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s grew 5 percent, and Edwards\u2019 dropped 5 percent. I\u2019m not aware of <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> being in third place or better in polls in any states other than <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, so the move ahead of Edwards in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> \u2013 the first in any independent poll \u2013 is significant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll, conducted July 23-26, surveyed 600 likely Democratic primary voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While we\u2019re on the subject of <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/581663nm07-27-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> has an interesting article today on his flip-flop on a gun-control issue, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/07\/27\/us\/27navajo.html?_r=1&#038;ref=science&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> has him taking his first official stand on the proposed Desert Rock coal-fired power plant on the Navajo Nation in <st1:place st=\"on\">Northern  New Mexico<\/st1:place>.
