{"id":2010,"date":"2007-07-24T11:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-ad-focuses-on-guard-families-veterans\/"},"modified":"2007-07-24T11:10:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:10:00","slug":"richardson-ad-focuses-on-guard-families-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-ad-focuses-on-guard-families-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson ad focuses on Guard families, veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqYyrkuF3AI\/AAAAAAAAC6o\/jW-VNjzTpTE\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqYyrkuF3AI\/AAAAAAAAC6o\/jW-VNjzTpTE\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090812152961686530\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> new television advertisement, now airing in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, is certain to get the attention of soldiers and their families.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The 30-second ad, released Monday, is airing in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhen a National Guard soldier would fall in combat, the family was only getting $12,000 \u2013 a national disgrace,\u201d the ad\u2019s narrator says. \u201cBill Richardson passed the first law in the nation giving National Guard soldiers $400,000 in life insurance. Eighteen states followed his lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad also promotes <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s proposal to create a \u201chero\u2019s health card\u201d for veterans, which will allow them to receive health care at any facility instead of only at veteran\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both are issues <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has talked about frequently on the campaign trail. In 2005, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> became the first state to pay $250,000 for life insurance for guard members. The amount was later raised to $400,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The new ad follows a controversy earlier this year about Richardson\u2019s claim that the idea for the state insurance benefit came after he learned from the mother of a killed soldier how little the federal government was paying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said the woman approached him at her son\u2019s funeral and thanked him for her son\u2019s death benefit check. The woman said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was lying and demanded that he stop telling the story, which he did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad is an effective way, on an important issue, to rebound from controversy.
