{"id":2008,"date":"2007-07-24T03:14:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-24T09:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-gives-stronger-debate-performance\/"},"modified":"2007-07-24T03:14:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-24T09:14:00","slug":"richardson-gives-stronger-debate-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/richardson-gives-stronger-debate-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson gives stronger debate performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqXDg0uF2-I\/AAAAAAAAC6Y\/blvZyByOiGY\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RqXDg0uF2-I\/AAAAAAAAC6Y\/blvZyByOiGY\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090689922487409634\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> gave his best debate performance of the 2008 Democratic presidential race on Monday, but he was still bested by a number of his opponents.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebiden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> all performed better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s statements were strong and definite. His voice was firm and he appeared confident and more passionate than he has during past debates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His strongest answer of the night \u2013 and perhaps his best in any debate thus far \u2013 came in answer to a question about what to do in <st1:place st=\"on\">Darfur<\/st1:place>. The question was asked by three people in a refugee camp in the war-torn region of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Sudan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Richardson answered first by pointing out that he had visited the camp earlier this year and met a woman who had been raped and seen her husband murdered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe said, \u2018When is <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> going to start helping?\u2019\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His speech quickened as he conveyed passion and principle in answering the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe answer here is caring about <st1:place st=\"on\">Africa<\/st1:place>. The answer here is not just thinking of our strategic interests as a country, as oil and Europe and the <st1:place st=\"on\">Middle East<\/st1:place>,\u201d he said. \u201cIt should be Africa, Asia and <st1:place st=\"on\">Latin America<\/st1:place>, doing something about poverty, about AIDS, about refuges, about those who have been left behind. That\u2019s how we restore American leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> gave other strong answers in response to questions about <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and No Child Left Behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI would scrap it. It doesn\u2019t work,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said of the controversial educational accountability system, while also finding a way to point out that he wants to raise starting teacher salaries to $40,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> reiterated his position that he wants all American troops out of that nation by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The format of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a> debate was such that candidates were asked tough questions and, because it had never been tried before, didn\u2019t know what to expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The questions, mostly presented by members of younger generations, were edgy. This was youth involvement at its best, and it kept the candidates on their toes. Richardson, who has struggled with bumbling answers in previous debates, still experienced some trouble with selecting the right words as he spontaneously answered questions, but it wasn\u2019t as noticeable as it has been during past debates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was her usual calm, collected and intelligent self and emerged victorious. Obama was his typical self in attempting to answer questions with more depth than most candidates, and, more often than not, succeeding. Edwards was the same angry and intelligent candidate he\u2019s been for awhile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Biden surprised many by keeping up with the frontrunners. He was blunt and came across as credible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">\u2018I\u2019m trying to provoke a debate\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Biden essentially called Richardson a liar for the governor\u2019s assertion that the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region> can withdraw its troops from <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> this year, calling that logistically impossible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That came after <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> gave a passionate answer in response to critics who say a quick withdrawal would plunge <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> into civil war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere is a civil war,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> openly picked a fight \u2013 saying, \u201cI\u2019m trying to provoke a debate\u201d \u2013 and he got it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLet\u2019s start telling the truth,\u201d Biden said, adding that pulling all troops would mean the 3,000 American civilians in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Baghdad<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> would also have to leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSo while you\u2019re taking them out, governor, take everybody out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Biden said it would take at least 9.5 months to withdraw all American troops from Iraq, and said even that would be too quick to do it safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJoe is right,\u201d she said. \u201cWith all due respect to some of my friends here, yes, we want to begin moving the troops out, but we want to do so safely and orderly and carefully. We don\u2019t want more loss of American life and Iraqi life as we attempt to withdraw, and it is time for us to admit that it\u2019s going to be complicated, so let\u2019s start now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> also unveiled, at the debate, another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ywR5Qjub7a0&amp;eurl=\" target=\"_blank\">television ad<\/a> in his humorous \u201cjob-interview\u201d series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After the debate, a focus group in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> hosted by CNN said Richardson and Clinton were the best candidates in the debate. Obama was the best, according to a focus group in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=64f6e1dd-d718-4f17-b6b9-ea197e7b1111\" target=\"_blank\">SurveyUSA poll<\/a> conducted after the debate found that 39 percent of Americans thought <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> won, while 15 percent said Obama won, 14 percent said Biden won, 10 percent said Edwards won and 4 percent each said Richardson and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravel2008.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gravel<\/a> won. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennis4president.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dennis Kucinich<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisdodd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Dodd<\/a> were at the bottom of the pack with 3 percent each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The survey of 717 debate watchers has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0707\/5081.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Politico<\/a> said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> finished fourth behind Edwards, Clinton and Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cQuick response is clearly not his strength.
