{"id":1990,"date":"2007-07-18T11:24:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-18T17:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/senate-kills-iraq-withdrawal-bill\/"},"modified":"2007-07-18T11:24:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-18T17:24:00","slug":"senate-kills-iraq-withdrawal-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/senate-kills-iraq-withdrawal-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate kills Iraq withdrawal bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While most of us were sleeping last night, members of the United States Senate were <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070718\/ap_on_go_co\/us_iraq;_ylt=AnMeDAciIKjQmNC4djGnFw2s0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">debating a proposal<\/a> to require that President Bush begin withdrawing American troops from <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> within 120 days and complete the pullout of combat troops by the end of April.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The measure needed 60 votes to pass, but only received 52. Four Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rp5NbV-gZpI\/AAAAAAAAC3g\/nVynZXJvt4c\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rp5NbV-gZpI\/AAAAAAAAC3g\/nVynZXJvt4c\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088589761126360722\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The measure is different than one Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., has signed on to in that it\u2019s more rigid because it sets a firm withdrawal date. Domenici favors a goal of withdrawing all combat troops from Iraq by March 2008 and implementation of other recommendations of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraq_Study_Group\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq Study Group<\/a>, and he voted against the proposal that was debated last night and this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a news release, Domenici criticized Democratic leaders. The proposal was to add the withdrawal dates to the bill that funds most military programs for the 2008 fiscal year, and the leadership pulled the entire bill after the proposed amendment failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI hope we will come to our senses and take up this bill again soon without the \u2018my-way-or-the-highway\u2019 demands of the majority leader. Delaying this bill sends a terrible message to our troops in harm\u2019s way and to the nation,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cI understand public frustration with the war, but a precipitous and arbitrarily mandated withdrawal is not a wise solution to the situation in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Senate can\u2019t debate the proposed amendment Domenici is cosponsoring related to the Iraq Study Group recommendations unless the majority leader brings the defense-funding bill back for consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The rare, all-night session came after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwaonline.net\/articles\/2007\/07\/18\/news\/071507dcwashdigest.txt\" target=\"_blank\">the House voted<\/a> last week to approve the withdrawal plan the Senate defeated early today. Instead, he chose to side with George Bush and his failed strategy in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>,\u201d Party Chairman Brian Col\u00f3n said. \u201cNew Mexicans want our troops to be safe, preferably in the loving embrace of their communities, and not in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, searching for a belated justification for Bush\u2019s war.
