{"id":1979,"date":"2007-07-16T11:35:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-16T17:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/fec-reports-give-clearer-picture-of-federal-races\/"},"modified":"2007-07-16T11:35:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-16T17:35:00","slug":"fec-reports-give-clearer-picture-of-federal-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/fec-reports-give-clearer-picture-of-federal-races\/","title":{"rendered":"FEC reports give clearer picture of federal races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Candidates for federal races had to file second-quarter fundraising reports by Sunday, and the money game in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s races became clearer with their public release.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., who has drawn three <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/U.S.%20Senate%20race\">lesser-known opponents<\/a> but no prominent Democratic challenger thus far, raised $650,000 from April to June, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2007\/jul\/14\/domenici-has-raised-17-million-campaign-coffer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Tribune<\/a> reported. His report isn\u2019t yet posted on the Federal Election Commission <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fec.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Web site<\/a>. The senator has $1 million in the bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H8NM01174\" target=\"_blank\">raised $393,000<\/a> during the quarter. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2007\/jul\/16\/wilson-raised-393k-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tribune<\/a>, 93 percent of <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city>\u2019s 1,040 donors are from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. She has $592,000 in cash on hand after reporting expenditures of more than $73,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wilson\u2019s only Democratic opponent who entered the race early enough to have to file a second-quarter report, Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H8NM01224\" target=\"_blank\">raised $181,000<\/a> from 700 donors, with 71 percent living in the First Congressional District. Heinrich reported having expenses of about $28,000, and he has almost $153,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, D-N.M., who doesn\u2019t currently have an announced opponent, reported <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H8NM03097\" target=\"_blank\">raising $1,500<\/a> and spending just over $10,000. He had a healthy $716,000 in on-hand cash at the end of the reporting period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/2nd%20Congressional%20District%20race\">previously reported<\/a>, U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H2NM02126\" target=\"_blank\">raised $245,000<\/a> during the quarter, spent $60,000 and ended the quarter with $383,000 on hand. Democratic challenger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H8NM02024\" target=\"_blank\">raised $140,000<\/a>, spent about $6,000, and has just over $133,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democratic challenger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a> filed an <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H6NM02085\" target=\"_blank\">amended report<\/a> with the FEC late Friday indicating that he raised $10,445, spent about $6,600 and has $5,584 on hand so, as far as I can tell, those are the most accurate number from Kissling\u2019s campaign. His original report, filed Thursday, indicated that he spent $79,686 and had a negative cash balance of more than $67,000, but he told me Friday, before the amended report was filed, that there was an error and that he actually had about $8,000 in cash on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A reported payment to the New Mexico Department of Labor for $73,098 that appeared on his original report is not on the amended report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Two other challengers to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and one other challenger to Pearce didn\u2019t enter the races early enough to have to file second-quarter reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">Heinrich raised 46 percent of what <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> raised during the reporting period. McCamley raised about 57 percent of what Pearce raised. Heinrich spent about 38 percent of what <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spent, while McCamley spent about 10 percent of what Pearce spent. Heinrich has about 26 percent of the on-hand cash of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, while McCamley has about 35 percent of the on-hand cash of Pearce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">It appears that, financially, McCamley is currently in better shape than Heinrich. However, Heinrich had more and smaller contributions, so his grassroots support appears to be stronger at this early date in the race.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Where <\/span><st1:place style=\"font-weight: bold;\" st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> stands<\/span><\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rpuupl-gZcI\/AAAAAAAAC14\/t6Iw54W1w8k\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rpuupl-gZcI\/AAAAAAAAC14\/t6Iw54W1w8k\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087852233637258690\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">As <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/richardson-raises-7-million-during.html\">previously reported<\/a>, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> raised about $7 million for his presidential campaign. <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+P80003411\" target=\"_blank\">His report<\/a> indicates that he has raised more than $13 million since entering the race on Jan. 21, and he has $7.1 million in cash on hand. Virtually all o<\/span><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">f <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s cash is for the primary because he\u2019s not actively raising money for the general election at this point.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>, at the end of the second quarter, had $34 million available for the primary. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> had $33 million, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> had $12 million.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">Richardson<\/span><\/st1:city><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">\u2019s donors during the second quarter of 2007 included<\/span><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"> the mayors of <st1:city st=\"on\">Omaha<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Neb.<\/st1:state> and <st1:city st=\"on\">Salt Lake City<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Utah<\/st1:state>, the first lady of <st1:state st=\"on\">Tennessee<\/st1:state>, a former <st1:state st=\"on\">Tennessee<\/st1:state> governor and former representatives from <st1:state st=\"on\">Maryland<\/st1:state> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. Also contributing were directors Stephen Spielberg, James Brooks and William Friedkin; actors Edward James Olmos, Kate Capshaw, Paul Newman, Jason Alexander, Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg; model Christie Brinkley; and Shirley Lansing, Friedkin\u2019s wife and the former CEO of Paramount.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">As reported today in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2007\/jul\/16\/bill-richardson-enjoys-high-home-state-donations-s\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Tribune<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is receiving more support from his home state than any other ex-governor in the presidential race. There are no other current governors running for president.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">Forty-five percent of <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s contributors during the first three months of 2007 were from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. During the second quarter, 25 percent were from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, indicating that he broadened his base but is still largely dependent on his small home state.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span  lang=\"EN\" style=\"color:black;\">New Mexicans contributed $1.3 million to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> during the second quarter.
