{"id":1970,"date":"2007-07-12T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-12T21:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/pearce-raises-245500-during-second-quarter\/"},"modified":"2007-07-12T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-12T21:30:00","slug":"pearce-raises-245500-during-second-quarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/pearce-raises-245500-during-second-quarter\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce raises $245,500 during second quarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rpadvl-gZSI\/AAAAAAAAC0s\/Gf38Fz8olJ0\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rpadvl-gZSI\/AAAAAAAAC0s\/Gf38Fz8olJ0\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5086426270135248162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., raised about $245,500 during the second quarter of 2007.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a report filed today with the <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nictusa.com\/cgi-bin\/dcdev\/forms\/C00373118\/293786\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Election Commission<\/a>, Pearce also reported expenses of almost $60,300 during the period that ended June 30. At the end of the period, he had a little more than $383,000 on hand for his 2008 re-election campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His fundraising total is high above that of his most active Democratic challenger, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, who raised $139,600 during the quarter. But McCamley\u2019s expenses during the period were $6,300, leaving the difference between what each candidate raised this quarter and carries over to the next period at a little more than $51,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce had $89,000 in contributions from political action committees, and his contributions from individuals totaled just over $122,000. McCamley actually raised more from individuals than Pearce, at just under $135,000. He had $1,500 in contributions from PACs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce began the quarter with just under $200,000 on-hand for his campaign. He ends it with $383,056 \u2013 about $250,000 more than McCamley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, the other announced Democratic challenger to Pearce, hasn\u2019t yet filed his second-quarter report, but must do so by Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Andrea Goff, Pearce\u2019s campaign finance director, said the congressman raised more money during the second quarter of 2007 and currently has more cash on hand than he ever has at this point in a race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m very pleased with the numbers,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are stronger than we\u2019ve ever been at this time in the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley was also pleased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy campaign has momentum. His doesn\u2019t. I outraised him in individual donations,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously the people in this district feel strongly that there needs to be a change and that I\u2019m the person to make that change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goff said that isn\u2019t obvious at all. Pointing to the fact that two of McCamley\u2019s contributors were staffers of Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> presidential campaign and two others have close ties to the campaign, she said much of McCamley\u2019s financial support during the quarter came from people living outside the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou could say that we raised slightly less from individuals if you wanted to spin it that way,\u201d she said. \u201cRaising money from the powers-that-be with <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s campaign and his cronies does not equal support in the district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goff did call McCamley\u2019s report \u201ca good report, an interesting report,\u201d but said it \u201cdoesn\u2019t tell me that he\u2019s got the support in the district that he needs to beat a congressman who has the support that Steve does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the flip side, it\u2019s also true that Pearce held two fundraisers during the quarter, and neither was in the district he represents. One was in <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> and hosted by the manager of the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, and the other was at a home in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, so a number of Pearce\u2019s individual contributors for the quarter also live outside the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">A competitive race?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley, who hasn\u2019t yet held a fundraiser, said \u201cthe only reason\u201d Pearce outraised him was the gifts from PACs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI should be able to pick up a similar amount of Democratic PAC funding once they realize that this is a winnable race,\u201d McCamley said. \u201cHe\u2019s picking his up in the beginning, I\u2019ll pick mine up in the end, and it will even out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It all adds up to an interesting race, McCamley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf this does not show a competitive race, I don\u2019t know what does,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goff said the Pearce campaign has \u201ca strong fundraising plan in effect for the rest of this year and next year\u201d and isn\u2019t worried at all. McCamley said he plans to start holding fundraisers this quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to the corporate PACs, Pearce\u2019s contributors included a number of people tied to the casino industry. He had contributions of $2,100 each from R.D. Hubbard and his wife, the owners of a casino and racetrack in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. He received $1,000 in cash and $933.91 in in-kind contributions from Harold Payne, the manager at the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sunland<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Park<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> casino. He received $2,300 from Isleta Pueblo and $1,000 from Sandia Pueblo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce also received $2,300 from <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa  Fe<\/st1:city> businessman Armand Ortega, $2,300 from <st1:city st=\"on\">Las  Cruces<\/st1:city> farmer James Salopek, $1,000 from PNM President Jeff Sterba, $1,000 from <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> businessman Woody Hunt and $500 from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> developer David Ikard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also had a refund of $15,000 from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Republican Congressional Committee<\/a>, which was due to an overpayment Pearce made to the group during last year\u2019s campaign, Goff said. Even though the refund had to be counted toward contributions to Pearce for the quarter, it doesn\u2019t count against the little more than $30,000 the group can give Pearce this election cycle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
