He spent $6,300 and had $133,300 on hand. All money McCamley raised is for the primary election, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/herndon1.sdrdc.com\/cgi-bin\/cancomsrs\/?_08+H8NM02024\" target=\"_blank\">the report<\/a> he filed with the Federal Election Commission late Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearceforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, the Republican McCamley is attempting to unseat, hasn\u2019t yet filed his report with the FEC. Neither has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, the other Democrat who has entered the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Two high-profile members of Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> presidential campaign team and two others with close ties to the campaign gave to McCamley during the second quarter. Dave Contarino, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign manager, gave $500, and Ed Romero, a former ambassador to <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Spain<\/st1:country-region> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s national finance chair, gave $1,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, Butch Maki, a close friend of Richardson who isn\u2019t officially working for the campaign but is helping him in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state>, gave McCamley $500, and Jim Noel, director of the state Judicial Standards Commission and the husband of Amanda Cooper, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s deputy campaign manager, gave $250.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Noel doesn\u2019t work for the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> campaign didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. But <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has been publicly complimentary of McCamley\u2019s tenure on the Do\u00f1a Ana County Commission, most notably for his support of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a> and his help in solving a decades-long water battle that hampered development in the Santa Teresa area west of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sunland<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Park<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley also received a total of $9,700 from people I could identify as having ties to the El Paso-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.verdecrs.com\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\">Verde Group<\/a>, which plans to build a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">new city<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> at Santa Teresa. McCamley pledged when he ran for county commission three years ago to solve the fight between the county and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sunland<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Park<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. A little more than a month after he took office, the governments signed an agreement that ended the fight and paved the way for the Verde Group to begin planning its development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other high-profile contributors to McCamley\u2019s campaign were Hobbs oilman Johnny Cope and his wife, who each gave the maximum of $2,300; Las Cruces developer Edgar Lopez and his wife, who each gave $2,300; Santa Fe art dealer and developer Gerald Peters, who gave $2,300; lobbyist Domonic Silva and his wife, who each gave $2,300; Lt. Gov. Diane Denish\u2019s husband Herb, who gave $1,000; Attorney General Gary King, who gave $1,000; lobbyist Dave Kimble, who gave $1,000; Las Cruces development partners David Steinborn and John Hummer, who each gave $1,000; New Mexico State University President Michael Martin, who gave $1,000; Public Regulation Commissioner Sandy Jones, who gave $500; the campaign of state Rep. Al Park, which gave $500; and Dan Glickman, a former U.S. agriculture secretary and current chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, who gave $500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley\u2019s fundraising was good enough to earn him some national attention. A poster on the liberal blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swingstateproject.com\/showDiary.do?diaryId=617\" target=\"_blank\">Swing State Project<\/a> wrote that his success at fundraising \u201ccould be evidence of an increased sense of optimism among ambitious Democrats\u201d since McCamley is taking on an incumbent Republican in a conservative district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Congressional Quarterly, in an article also published on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/cq\/2007\/07\/09\/cq_3035.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times\u2019 Web site<\/a>, noted McCamley\u2019s success in \u201ca district that generally has a significant Republican tilt.\u201d The D.C. publication <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/leading-the-news\/franken-outpaces-coleman-in-2nd-quarter-2007-07-10.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a> also noted his fundraising total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 5:35 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The McCamley campaign just filed an amended report with the FEC. Essentially, the campaign erroneously identified four contributors in its original report as employees of the Verde Group. Those contributors do not work for the company, McCamley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I originally reported in this article that $15,300 was identifiable as coming from people with ties to the company. The change dropped that number to the $9,700 now reported in this article.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe made a mistake. It was four typos, and we\u2019re fixing it now,\u201d McCamley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 6:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The governor\u2019s campaign released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCampaign contributions are personal decisions made by the individuals and should not be construed as an endorsement by the governor or the campaign,\u201d spokesman Pahl Shipley said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill McCamley\u2019s campaign contributor list includes a number of high-profile business owners and New Mexico Democrats, and it\u2019s earning him some national attention.
