Susana Martinez\u2019s job approval ratings are sinking, according to a new poll conducted for KOB-TV.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/SURVEYUSANM10-3\" target=\"_blank\">The poll<\/a> released this week by New Jersey-based Survey USA said 49 percent of registered voters disapprove of the job Martinez is doing. Only 36 percent approve.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_60345\" class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60345\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Martinez-Susana-336x196.jpg\" alt=\"Susana Martinez\" width=\"336\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Martinez-Susana-336x196.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Martinez-Susana.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Heath Haussamen \/ NMPolitics.net<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gov. Susana Martinez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This poll, in which Survey USA interviewed 682 registered voters, is even worse for Martinez than a poll released by<i>\u00a0<\/i><em>The Albuquerque Journal<\/em>\u00a0this week. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/859183\/govs-approval-rating-slips-to-42-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\">The\u00a0<em>Journal\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0poll<\/a> showed 44 percent disapproving of the Republican governor\u2019s job performance and 42 percent approving.<\/p>\n<p>The Survey USA poll showed Martinez\u2019s approval rating was 57 percent among fellow Republicans, though more than a quarter of GOP voters disapproved of the way she\u2019s handling the job. Among Democrats, 68 percent disapproved of Martinez\u2019s performance and 22 percent approved. And 50 percent of independent voters disapproved of her performance while 35 percent approved.<\/p>\n<p>In the presidential race, Survey USA showed Democrat Hillary Clinton\u00a0has a substantial lead in New Mexico over Republican Donald Trump\u00a0and minor-party candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The poll, conducted between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2, shows Clinton at 46 percent and Trump at 33 percent. Libertarian candidate and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson\u00a0had 14 percent and 2 percent supported Green Party candidate Jill Stein.<\/p>\n<p>In the race for New Mexico secretary of state, Democrat Maggie Toulouse Oliver\u00a0holds a lead of 54 percent to 34 percent over Republican Nora Espinoza,\u00a0the Survey USA poll found.<\/p>\n<p>These results were far more positive for Clinton \u2014 and far less favorable for Johnson \u2014 than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/857961\/clinton-trump-in-tight-race-in-new-mexico.html\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>\u00a0poll<\/a> that was conducted by the Research & Polling firm in Albuquerque. Survey USA uses automated \u201crobo calls\u201d with people with land lines and the internet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the bigger picture is that both polls detected a similar move in the governor\u2019s numbers,\u201d Sanderoff said. \u201cBoth show a significant slippage in the governor\u2019s popularity since she first got re-elected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout most of Martinez\u2019s first term, her approval ratings were in the 60 percent range.<\/p>\n<p>As for the presidential race, the fact that the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>\u00a0poll was done a few days before Survey USA\u2019s could explain part of the difference, Sanderoff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI notice that in battleground states Trump has been declining in recent days and Gary Johnson had dropped significantly,\u201d Sanderoff told\u00a0<em>The New Mexican<\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1442028614\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Wednesday<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Johnson have had rough stretches recently. Sanderoff\u2019s poll was taken before a\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0story that showed Trump declaring a loss of $916 million income tax returns in 1995. That is such a large deduction it could have allowed Trump not to pay any federal income taxes for as much as 18 years.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>\u00a0poll also was taken before Trump went on a wee-hours Twitter rage, railing against a Miss Universe winner he\u2019s criticized for gaining weight.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As for Johnson, Sanderoff said his poll for the Albuquerque newspaper probably doesn\u2019t fully reflect the fallout of Johnson\u2019s much-publicized \u201cworld leaders\u201d gaffe. Johnson on Sept. 28 couldn\u2019t name a single world leader he admired when asked by interviewer Chris Matthews on MSNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Statistician Nate Silver\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0Fivethirtyeight\u00a0webs<wbr \/>ite, which rates pollsters, gives both Research and Polling and Survey USA a grade of \u201cA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Survey USA poll showed Hispanic voters supporting Clinton 52 percent, compared to 21 percent for Trump and 19 percent for Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>In the poll Trump barely led Clinton with white voters, 42 to 40 percent. Johnson was at 11 percent. Clinton had a strong lead with women, 49 percent to 31 percent. Clinton also was supported by a strong plurality of men in the poll, 42 percent to Trump\u2019s 34 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton was ahead with voters who identified themselves as independents, 35 percent to Trump\u2019s 29 percent. Johnson was shown winning 24 percent of voters who identified themselves as independents. The former governor was drawing 9 percent of those who identified themselves as Republicans and 8 percent of those identifying as Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico\u2019s U.S. senators, both Democrats, fared much better than the governor\u2019s in the public ratings. Sen. Tom Udall\u2019s\u00a0job approval numbers were 52 percent approve, 29 percent disapprove. A plurality, 46 percent approved of Sen. Martin Heinrich\u2019s\u00a0job performance and 28 percent disapproved.<\/p>\n<p>In the presidential race, Survey USA interviewed 594 likely voters. The margin of error was 4.1 percent. In the secretary of state\u2019s race, 524 likely voters participated. The margin of error was 4.4 percent.
