{"id":1936,"date":"2007-07-05T13:38:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-05T19:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/pearce-discloses-funding-requests-senators-wont\/"},"modified":"2007-07-05T13:38:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-05T19:38:00","slug":"pearce-discloses-funding-requests-senators-wont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/07\/pearce-discloses-funding-requests-senators-wont\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearce discloses funding requests; senators won&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ro1JOyuSXII\/AAAAAAAACwA\/gx_17N_N2p0\/s1600-h\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ro1JOyuSXII\/AAAAAAAACwA\/gx_17N_N2p0\/s200\/Pearce,+Steve.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083800072854068354\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>I\u2019ve been writing in the last week about <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s members of Congress being asked to release lists of requests for local project funding they made for possible inclusion in the budget currently being debated in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I have already written that Democratic Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/udall-shows-public-his-project-funding.html\">Tom Udall<\/a> and Republican Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/wilson-releases-list-of-funding.html\">Heather Wilson<\/a> have released their lists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As promised, Republican Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> released his list late Tuesday. You can view it by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/district\/fy2008.html#status\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He actually went beyond what the other representatives did by not only releasing his list of requests but detailing the status of each, which is impressive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Meanwhile, Senators <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> won\u2019t release a list of their requests, spokeswomen for both offices said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSen. Bingaman does not plan to release a list of all his requests,\u201d spokeswoman Jude McCartin said. \u201cHe submits all worthy requests from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> communities for federal funding, even though he knows only a very small number will be funded. Under the new Senate transparency rules if taxpayer dollars are going to actually be committed to a project, the name of the requesting senator will be attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That means that, as is the case in the House, when a request makes its way into a bill, the name of the senator who requested it is attached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019m not happy with the decisions of the offices of both senators. It is encouraging that, in the House and Senate, those requesting local-project funding will be identified in bills, allowing for some level of public disclosure, but Udall, Wilson and Pearce have gone beyond what\u2019s required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All three should be recognized for that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been writing in the last week about New Mexico\u2019s members of Congress being asked to release lists of requests for local project funding they made for possible inclusion in the budget currently being debated in Washington.
