Both candidates for governor want to change that.<\/p>\n<p>The New Mexico Independent, which has been championing the enacting of a law that would require what\u2019s called a tax expenditure report, got both candidates <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/58825\/guv-candidates-support-revealing-cost-of-tax-credits-exemptions-and-deductions\">on the record<\/a> about the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely, transparency is very important to the citizens of New Mexico,\u201d the Independent quoted Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.susanamartinez2010.com\/\">Susana Martinez<\/a> as saying in response to a question about supporting tax expenditure reports. \u201cThey want to know where their tax dollars are or aren\u2019t going. And they want to make sure they understand where the tax incentives are going. Transparency is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianedenish.com\/\">Diane Denish<\/a> was quoted by the Independent as saying this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI support increased transparency with regard to all of government\u2019s workings and tax transparency is no exception. I believe the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/03\/sunshine-portal-signed-into-law\/\">Sunshine Portal<\/a>, which I fought to pass and signed into law, is a perfect repository for all government information and as governor I would expand the Sunshine Portal to include all information regarding how taxpayer dollars are spent.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Mexico is one of nine states that doesn\u2019t produce a regular report that tracks how much the state gives up each year to tax credits, exemptions and deductions.
