{"id":1918,"date":"2007-06-29T14:41:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-29T20:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/las-cruces-visit-is-crucial-to-guvs-fundraising-goal\/"},"modified":"2007-06-29T14:41:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-29T20:41:00","slug":"las-cruces-visit-is-crucial-to-guvs-fundraising-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/las-cruces-visit-is-crucial-to-guvs-fundraising-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"Las Cruces visit is crucial to guv&#8217;s fundraising goal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoVuviuSW3I\/AAAAAAAACt4\/2Pct0jILdRw\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoVuviuSW3I\/AAAAAAAACt4\/2Pct0jILdRw\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5081589517611326322\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>With the second-quarter fundraising deadline a little more than 24 hours away, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> is in <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> this afternoon and evening attending several fundraisers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As of the time of this posting, the governor has raised just under $1.3 million toward his goal of raising $2 million in the week before tomorrow\u2019s midnight deadline. <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> and <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city> will be crucial to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> meeting that goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the campaign is also relying on a great deal of support through the Internet in the next day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cGovernor Richardson\u2019s poll numbers are skyrocketing,\u201d Richardson Deputy Campaign Manager Amanda Cooper wrote today in an e-mail to supporters. \u201cNow is the time to capitalize on this momentum with a fundraising haul that will really make the media sit up and pay attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many are waiting to see whether <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> can catch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> in fundraising this quarter. Edwards, who had a goal of raising about $2.3 million this week, has raised $1.8 million so far, and his total for the quarter, according to his Web site, is now $8.5 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But a new poll reveals that, even if he passes Edwards in fundraising, the road ahead will be difficult for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/2007-06-27-hispanics-dems-cover_N.htm?csp=34\" target=\"_blank\">Gallup\/USA Today<\/a> poll released Thursday, 59 percent of Hispanic voters across the nation say they have never heard of Richardson, who is three-fourths Mexican.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Of the Hispanic voters surveyed, 59 percent said they support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> had 13 percent of support, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was third with 11 percent. Edwards was at 7 percent in the poll, which surveyed 502 Hispanic adults this month. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the news isn\u2019t all bad for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on the minority front. Coming off Thursday night\u2019s Democratic presidential candidate forum focusing on black America, the American Indian group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prezontherez.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prez on the Rez<\/a>, which is hosting the first-ever presidential forum on American Indian issues later this year, criticized Democratic candidates for failing to acknowledge American Indians while repeatedly mentioning blacks and Hispanics during Thursday\u2019s debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other than Richardson and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravel2008.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gravel<\/a>, the group has had difficulty getting candidates to commit to attend, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> has already rejected the invitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe only candidate willing to show leadership when it comes to Indian country is Bill Richardson,\u201d Kalyn Free, president of the group hosting the debate, said in a news release. \u201cIndian voters are watching closely to see if any other candidate will rise to the occasion in offering proven leadership for Indian country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The release notes that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u201cwas the first candidate to commit to (the Prez on the Rez debate), and has made Indians a priority in his campaign. Most notably, the governor proposes establishing a cabinet-level Department of Indian Affairs and appoint as its secretary an American Indian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has busy campaign schedule ahead<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is working on his name recognition among Hispanics. He plans to attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naleo.org\/FAC2007\/forums.html\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Latino Elected Officials Democratic Presidential Candidate Forum<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Orlando<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs I continue my run to be the first Latino president of the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region>, I am excited to have the opportunity to attend this forum and to discuss issues of concern to the Latino community with my fellow candidates,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s schedule stays busy after that. Following two days with no announced campaign activity, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> will be in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Philadelphia<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> for a candidate forum hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">National Education Association<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He then heads to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New   Hampshire<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, where he\u2019ll spend the Fourth of July, actually beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday, celebrating at a number of events. He\u2019ll also attend a number of campaign events in that state on Thursday and Friday before spending Friday evening fundraising in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> currently has no public campaign events scheduled for next weekend. The following Monday, he plans to attend fundraisers in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he will campaign in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> before heading to <st1:state st=\"on\">Ohio<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> for fundraisers on Wednesday evening. He will spend next Thursday fundraising in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Michigan<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and will also attend a candidate forum sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">NAACP<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the second-quarter fundraising deadline a little more than 24 hours away, Gov.
