{"id":1916,"date":"2007-06-29T11:03:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-29T17:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/udall-shows-public-his-project-funding-requests\/"},"modified":"2007-06-29T11:03:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-29T17:03:00","slug":"udall-shows-public-his-project-funding-requests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/udall-shows-public-his-project-funding-requests\/","title":{"rendered":"Udall shows public his project-funding requests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoU7lSuSWzI\/AAAAAAAACtY\/paP43F9EyDU\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoU7lSuSWzI\/AAAAAAAACtY\/paP43F9EyDU\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5081533266424650546\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Earlier this month, <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/house-democrats-wont-keep-promise-for.html\">I wrote<\/a> about Democrats in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. House of Representatives<\/a> failing to meet one of the new requirements regarding disclosure of earmarks they approved when they took office in January. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They approved a rule requiring that requests by lawmakers for project funding \u2013 an important source of cash for many communities but also a pork barrel for some lawmakers \u2013 be included in spending bills in time to be debated on their merits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Earlier this month, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/obey.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Obey<\/a>, D-Wis. and chair of the powerful appropriations committee, announced that the earmarks won\u2019t be added to the spending bills until the fall, when it\u2019s too late to thoroughly debate them. He said that was because committee members and staffers haven\u2019t had time to fully review the 36,000 requests that have come in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the spirit of openness, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>, the only Democrat in the House from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and a member of the appropriations committee, has published a list of all his requests on his Web site. Let the public scrutiny begin.
