{"id":1905,"date":"2007-06-27T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-27T18:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/domenici-wont-support-immigration-reform-bill\/"},"modified":"2007-06-27T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-27T18:16:00","slug":"domenici-wont-support-immigration-reform-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/domenici-wont-support-immigration-reform-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Domenici won&#8217;t support immigration reform bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoKprCuSWoI\/AAAAAAAACsA\/CKS3xGbXRgI\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoKprCuSWoI\/AAAAAAAACsA\/CKS3xGbXRgI\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080809886557821570\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> has decided he won\u2019t support an <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:s.01639:\" target=\"_blank\">immigration proposal<\/a> he helped draft because amendments he believes are critical won\u2019t be approved.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In response to a question, Domenici\u2019s office confirmed for me moments ago that he no longer supports the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The GOP senator\u2019s decision came after the Senate, on a vote of 53-45, rejected earlier today an amendment proposed by Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/hutchison.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kay Bailey Hutchison<\/a>, R-Texas, that would have required all adult illegal immigrants to return home within two years to qualify for permanent legal status in the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>. The bill requires only heads of households to return to their home countries to apply for legal status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many oppose that because they say it provides amnesty to adults who have broken the law. The defeat of Hutchison\u2019s amendment, said Domenici spokeswoman Courtney Sanders, led <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s senior senator to believe that critical amendments won\u2019t be approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear that the bill is not going to be workable, and Senator Domenici won\u2019t support it,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici was part of a bipartisan group of senators who worked with the president to reach a compromise on the bill. Even if the Senate approves the bill, its chances of getting a hearing in the more partisan House, where there is less support for compromise, are questionable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s not clear whether other GOP senators who had supported the compromise attempt will also give up on the bill, but the loss of Domenici\u2019s support is a blow for those hoping the bill will be approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici voted earlier this month against ending debate on the bill and scheduling a final vote. He said at the time more discussion was necessary to hammer out critical but divisive issues. The majority of senators agreed that the bill was not ready for a final vote but, after that test vote failed, Democratic leadership shelved the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The proposal was revived Tuesday when a majority of senators, including Domenici, voted to move ahead with the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sanders said Domenici\u2019s decision to oppose the bill was one \u201cthat he did not come to easily.\u201d He has worked tirelessly to help reach compromise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSenator Domenici is committed to moving a good bill forward,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
