{"id":1900,"date":"2007-06-26T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-26T20:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/county-committee-will-consider-how-spaceport-tax-money-set-aside-for-education-should-be-spent\/"},"modified":"2007-06-26T14:59:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-26T20:59:00","slug":"county-committee-will-consider-how-spaceport-tax-money-set-aside-for-education-should-be-spent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/county-committee-will-consider-how-spaceport-tax-money-set-aside-for-education-should-be-spent\/","title":{"rendered":"County committee will consider how spaceport tax money set aside for education should be spent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoF-VdANOoI\/AAAAAAAACrQ\/08tGgZcP3Zw\/s1600-h\/Spaceport+america.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RoF-VdANOoI\/AAAAAAAACrQ\/08tGgZcP3Zw\/s200\/Spaceport+america.gif\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080480761678477954\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Do\u00f1a Ana County Board of Commissioners<\/a> voted today to create a committee that will help it determine how to spend the money from the spaceport tax that will be set aside for education.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When voters approved the tax to help fund <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a> in April, they also OK\u2019d the setting aside of 25 percent of the proceeds \u2013 about $1.6 million annually \u2013 for spaceport-related education in the county. The commission has already approved a resolution stating that the funds will be divided among the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcps.k12.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gisd.k12.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gadsden<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatch.k12.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hatch<\/a> school districts according to population and will be used education related to the aerospace industry in grades 6-12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">How the districts will use the money is what is yet to be determined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On a 4-0 vote, with Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district4\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Evans<\/a> absent, commissioners approved the creation of the committee. It will consist of nine members \u2013 one representative of each school district, one county commissioner, one member from the New Mexico State University College of Education, one from the NMSU College of Engineering, a representative from the aerospace industry and two members of the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Commissioners will accept applications for membership and then, at their second meeting in July, appoint members to the committee. The committee will be tasked with making recommendations to the commission by January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The tax begins on Jan. 1, and the county should receive its first tax payment in approximately March, county Attorney John Caldwell told commissioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Sierra and Otero county commissions have not yet voted on whether to let voters decide if they want to enact the tax. Until at least two governments approve the tax, a spaceport taxing district can\u2019t be formed. State law requires that such a district be in place before the other 75 percent of the county\u2019s tax revenue can be spent on the spaceport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, commissioners in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> have placed a number of other conditions on the money that must be met before it can be spent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Do\u00f1a Ana County Board of Commissioners voted today to create a committee that will help it determine how to spend the money from the spaceport tax that will be set aside for education.
