Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move comes the day after Denish\u2019s office announced that spokesman Michael Henningsen was leaving to take a job as public information officer for the <a href=\"http:\/\/edd.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Development Department<\/a>. Nelson will take some personal time after finishing duties at the Tribune in July, and will begin her new job on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nelson is one of the most respected political journalists around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have loved <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> politics for 18 years and always wanted to experience it from the other side,\u201d Nelson said in a news release. \u201cWhile it\u2019s hard to leave the news side \u2013 especially the Albuquerque Tribune \u2013 I\u2019m looking forward to this as my newest adventure. I admire the lieutenant governor and respect the work she\u2019s doing, as well as the work she\u2019ll do in the future. She\u2019s making a difference for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m glad to have Kate as part of the team,\u201d Denish said. \u201cWe have some serious work to do to protect our communities, grow our economy and improve access to health care, and we\u2019re going to need to reach out to every community in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to do this. I know Kate has the talent and dedication to help us do that outreach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s hard to ignore the fact that the shift to a higher-profile spokesperson comes as Denish is filling the shoes left by a governor who\u2019s on the campaign trail and preparing for her own run at the state\u2019s top job in 2010. It should also be noted that Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> is a master at snatching journalists to fill government jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nelson has spent 18 years with the Tribune as a reporter, columnist, editor and managing editor. She has hosted a weekly talk show on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knmetv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">KNME-TV<\/a>, and served as an adjunct professor at the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of  <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She won the New Mexico Press Association\u2019s first-place award for columns in 1992, 1998, 2001 and 2002, and was named by the Governor\u2019s Commission on the Status of Women as an \u201cOutstanding Woman of New Mexico\u201d in 2001.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kate Nelson, the managing editor of the Albuquerque Tribune and a longtime political junkie, is leaving to become deputy chief of staff and communications director for Lt.
