But in an e-mail sent to campaign supporters today, Paul Maslin, a pollster who works for the campaign, claims the governor\u2019s support in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has reached 13 percent in his newest poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And he claims that, \u201camongst the likeliest caucusgoers (those who attended the 2004 caucuses, voted in the 2006 primary and are definite to attend next year\u2019s caucus) the governor has overtaken <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senator (Barack) Obama<\/a> for 3rd place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No other numbers are provided, so that\u2019s all I can tell you. Independent polls have frequently placed Obama in third and <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> in fourth in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. The most recent poll, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070620\/ap_on_el_pr\/poll2008_iowa_1;_ylt=AqrGGeRHJL4RicWOPJz.s0Jpu6cv\" target=\"_blank\">Mason-Dixon Polling and Research<\/a>, has Richardson at 6 percent, Obama at 18 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> at 21 percent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> at 22 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson\u2019s campaign wants the governor to be considered by all to be among the top tier of candidates after second-quarter fundraising totals are released, which will happen no later than July 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThese poll numbers, coupled with strong financing numbers, could end the debate about first tier and second tier candidates,\u201d Maslin\u2019s e-mail states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The e-mail asks for a $25 contribution to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 3:25 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign put out a news release that contains the poll\u2019s numbers. The poll, conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin and Associates<\/a> for the campaign, has Edwards at 34 percent, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> at 24 percent, Obama at 17 percent and Richardson at 13 percent. It was conducted June 18-20, surveyed 500 likely <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> caucus goers has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When only the \u201clikeliest\u201d caucus goers are considered \u2013 the 40 percent who attended the 2004 caucuses, voted in the 2006 primary and said they will definitely attend next year\u2019s caucuses \u2013 Edwards was at 31 percent, Clinton was at 23 percent, Richardson was at 18 percent and Obama was at 16 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThese positive numbers are exciting but not surprising. Iowans are getting to know Bill Richardson and he\u2019s winning them over,\u201d Richardson Campaign Manager Dave Contarino said. \u201cIn advertising and in person, the governor has begun to get his message out to Iowans, and they are responding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If this new poll has validity, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> keeps pace with or surpasses Edwards in second-quarter fundraising, he will have a very strong argument for being considered a top-tier candidate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
