{"id":18882,"date":"2010-06-29T13:24:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T19:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=18882"},"modified":"2010-06-30T10:19:56","modified_gmt":"2010-06-30T16:19:56","slug":"council-oks-interim-committee-webcasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/06\/council-oks-interim-committee-webcasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Council OKs interim committee webcasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_12540\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12540\" title=\"Roundhouse\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Roundhouse-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Roundhouse-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Roundhouse.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Roundhouse in Santa Fe (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/committeedetail.aspx?CommitteeCode=ALC\">Legislative Council<\/a> unanimously approved today a motion directing staff to begin webcasting interim committee meetings as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The motion the committee approved directs staff to \u201cexpeditiously begin\u00a0webcasting\u00a0as many\u00a0interim committee meetings\u00a0as practicable within budget and scheduling constraints\u201d by means that could include using existing video conferencing systems or the infrastructure already in place to webcast committee meetings held during legislative sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The committee\u2019s motion directs that the webcasts \u201cbe produced in substantially the same manner as the\u00a0webcasts produced during the session,\u201d meaning that only official portions of meetings will be webcast, and there will be no archiving.<\/p>\n<p>Interim committees meet between regular sessions to explore issues and craft legislation that will be considered in the next session. They\u2019ve already been meeting this year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Normally, those meetings are held around the state to give New Mexicans a chance to have input in the legislative process and give lawmakers a chance to see what\u2019s going on in areas other than their home districts and Santa Fe. But because of the budget crunch, lawmakers decided to hold all interim meetings in Santa Fe this year.<\/p>\n<p>As I reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/06\/will-interim-committee-meetings-be-webcast\/\">earlier today<\/a>, it was state Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HARNO\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, who asked legislative leaders to allow webcasting and video conferencing of those meetings.<\/p>\n<p>You can view a list of interim committees, and find schedules of their upcoming meetings, by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/committees_interim.aspx\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 1:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arnold-Jones, who has championed legislative webcasting, said she\u2019s pleased with the council\u2019s decision, which moves the Legislature toward increased accessibility and transparency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, June 30, 10:20 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSTEI\">Jeff Steinborn<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, who has pushed webcasting legislation in the past:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is another step in the right direction.
