{"id":1884,"date":"2007-06-22T16:17:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-22T22:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/guv-should-better-explain-opposition-to-gay-marriage\/"},"modified":"2007-06-22T16:17:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-22T22:17:00","slug":"guv-should-better-explain-opposition-to-gay-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/guv-should-better-explain-opposition-to-gay-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Guv should better explain opposition to gay marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RnxKiNANOeI\/AAAAAAAACqA\/Lh1NYoBALGM\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RnxKiNANOeI\/AAAAAAAACqA\/Lh1NYoBALGM\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079016431233612258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In celebration of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> campaign released a statement today saying <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> is \u201cin the midst of a difficult struggle for basic human rights.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis month is a worthy symbol of our progress towards full civil rights for every American, but we cannot ignore the challenges we still must conquer before we can truly move forward and create a better society,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He then highlighted his own record of opposing \u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell,\u201d expanding anti-discrimination laws in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and providing state health insurance to domestic partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs president, I will not rest until we have fulfilled <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s most basic promise \u2013 that every human being is created equal and that every American is due certain basic, inalienable rights,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in the release. \u201cI know that until the human rights of every American are guaranteed, the rights of all Americans are demeaned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Without taking a position on gay marriage, I want to point out what I see as an inconsistency. I don\u2019t understand how the statement <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> put out today, similar to those he\u2019s made before, jives with his opposition to gay marriage and his explanation: \u201cI\u2019m just not there yet. I\u2019m a Catholic. I think marriage is between a man and a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Will the GLBT community let him have it both ways on this one because he pays attention to them and could help them gain expanded rights in other areas? Or will they question his inconsistencies and force him to explain this seeming contradiction?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Why doesn\u2019t \u201cfull civil rights for every American\u201d include the right to marry whoever you want, as long as you\u2019re both adults who can legally make such a decision? I\u2019d love to hear <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> give a better explanation than \u201cI\u2019m a Catholic\u201d \u2013 one that indicates intelligence and a reasoned opinion on this difficult issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In celebration of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, Gov.
