{"id":1880,"date":"2007-06-22T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-22T15:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/aclu-to-open-office-in-las-cruces\/"},"modified":"2007-06-22T09:44:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-22T15:44:00","slug":"aclu-to-open-office-in-las-cruces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/aclu-to-open-office-in-las-cruces\/","title":{"rendered":"ACLU to open office in Las Cruces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu-nm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a> has hired a new director to oversee a new <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> office that will focus on immigration issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Maria Nape is the new director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am thrilled to head up such an exciting and timely initiative for the ACLU,\u201d Nape said. \u201cThe intensification of law enforcement on the border and growing reactionary attitudes towards immigrants around the country make the ACLU\u2019s new border rights office a vital effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Prior to joining the ACLU, Nape spent five years advocating for the rights of migrant farmworkers as director of an organization in <st1:state st=\"on\">Indiana<\/st1:state> and, before that, as executive director of a farmworker council in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. She received her law degree from <st1:placename st=\"on\">Indiana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> and most recently served on the faculty of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Atlantic<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype>\u2019s <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">School<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Public   Administration<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMaria is a tremendous addition to our organization,\u201d said ACLU of New Mexico Executive Director Peter Simonson. \u201cHer combination of legal experience and familiarity with the plight of immigrants will enable her to effectively lead the ACLU\u2019s efforts in this new endeavor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When fully outfitted, the new ACLU office in <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city> will house a staff of three who, in tandem with the <a href=\"http:\/\/aclu.org\/immigrants\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">National ACLU Immigrants\u2019 Rights Project<\/a>, will support the border rights work of ACLU affiliates in <st1:state st=\"on\">Texas<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:state> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">San Diego<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. The office is part of a state-wide expansion of the ACLU\u2019s facilities and a national ACLU plan to raise its capacity in the middle part of the country to equal that of its organizations on the wealthier and more populous coasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cCurrent reactionary laws against immigrants are not working,\u201d Nape said. \u201cNowhere is this more true than on the border. People are searched, deported and sometimes even assaulted on the presumption that they are immigrants and in this country illegally.
