{"id":1837,"date":"2007-06-11T11:18:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T17:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/is-richardson-the-hispanic-candidate-or-not\/"},"modified":"2007-06-11T11:18:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T17:18:00","slug":"is-richardson-the-hispanic-candidate-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/is-richardson-the-hispanic-candidate-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Richardson the Hispanic candidate or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rm2EFdANNsI\/AAAAAAAACjw\/Tue_8dJYpRo\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rm2EFdANNsI\/AAAAAAAACjw\/Tue_8dJYpRo\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074857584336123586\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> running as a Hispanic or as an American who\u2019s proud to be Hispanic?  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s a fine line between the two, but the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> governor, until recently, repeatedly insisted the latter is the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m not running as a Hispanic,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FOX News<\/a> in December. \u201cI\u2019m running as an American who\u2019s proud to be a Hispanic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s not what he said during a campaign stop in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am the Latino candidate,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chieftain.com\/metro\/1181372262\/1\" target=\"_blank\">Pueblo Chieftain<\/a> quoted <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as saying during a news conference in that city on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Either you want to be the Hispanic candidate or you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> didn\u2019t turn up the Hispanic rhetoric until after <st1:state st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> moved up their primaries and a poll showed that a majority of voters don\u2019t identify him as Hispanic. I realize he\u2019s just reacting to that and shifting his campaign strategy, but he has made stirring statements in the past about his candidacy being about unity, not ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Were those statements of principle or convenience? Is <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> a man who stands up for his beliefs, or who says whatever it takes to get ahead?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I know what some of you are thinking: Do any of the presidential candidates truly stand for something, or do their beliefs shift with the newest public opinion polls?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s a valid question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019m not sure, but I would make one observation. Last year, in the wake of Republican scandals in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, Democratic senators named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> as their spokesman for a series of ethics reform proposals. The proposals, which the Senate eventually watered down over Obama\u2019s objections, to the point that even Obama voted against them, were originally designed to take much of the corporate money out of the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">To set an example and avoid accusations of hypocrisy, when Obama was made the spokesman for that campaign he quit flying on private, corporate jets at commercial airline rates, a practice Senate rules allow that is widely used by members of both parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Instead, I discovered while reading Obama\u2019s newest book this weekend, he started flying commercial, just like the rest of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve said this before, but if <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had voluntarily placed the contributions limits on his 2006 re-election campaign that he was proposing to the Legislature in 2007, they probably would have been approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Since he didn\u2019t do that, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> looks like a hypocrite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is Bill Richardson running as a Hispanic or as an American who\u2019s proud to be Hispanic?
