{"id":1827,"date":"2007-06-07T14:29:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-07T20:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/richardson-gains-ground-against-gop-frontrunners\/"},"modified":"2007-06-07T14:29:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-07T20:29:00","slug":"richardson-gains-ground-against-gop-frontrunners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/richardson-gains-ground-against-gop-frontrunners\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson gains ground against GOP frontrunners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rmhr0dANNgI\/AAAAAAAACiQ\/W0x6VG1Rw2U\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rmhr0dANNgI\/AAAAAAAACiQ\/W0x6VG1Rw2U\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073423529115727362\" border=\"0\"><\/a>New polls show Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> has gained ground in head-to-head competition against the two GOP frontrunners for their party\u2019s presidential nomination, but that\u2019s not entirely due to an increase in his popularity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s gains are partially due to \u201csoft support for the leading GOP candidates,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/election_2008_richardson_gains_ground_against_both_giuliani_and_mccain\" target=\"_blank\">Rasmussen Reports<\/a> article that accompanies its newest survey results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the survey, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> trails <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joinrudy2008.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rudy Giuliani<\/a> 43 percent to 39 percent. He trails <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> 43 percent to 38 percent. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/election_2008_giuliani_r_51_richardson_d_34\" target=\"_blank\">April<\/a>, he trailed Giuliani 51 to 34 percent. In February, he trailed McCain 45 to 36 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has clearly gained some support, but the GOP candidates have also lost some. Rasmussen Reports found that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is still unknown to about 25 percent of those surveyed, while 31 percent view him favorably and 42 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The survey was conducted May 29, three days after <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s appearance on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3032608\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meet the Press<\/a> that earned him a lot of criticism. It was a national survey of 800 likely voters, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> continues to work hard at gaining attention and raising money. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/politics\/4867607.html\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Chronicle<\/a>, the governor raised $275,000 this week in <st1:city st=\"on\">San  Antonio<\/st1:city> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Houston<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And he\u2019ll certainly gain some attention for <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/R\/RICHARDSON_THE_HUNTER?SITE=NMALJ&#038;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" target=\"_blank\">this newest profile<\/a>, done by Associated Press reporter Barry Massey. It portrays him as an avid hunter and a defender of gun rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Does that help him in a Democratic primary? Maybe not, but it will help him in the Rasmussen head-to-head surveys.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New polls show Gov.
