{"id":1804,"date":"2007-06-04T10:51:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-04T16:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/richardsons-campaign-declares-debate-a-success\/"},"modified":"2007-06-04T10:51:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-04T16:51:00","slug":"richardsons-campaign-declares-debate-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/06\/richardsons-campaign-declares-debate-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson&#8217;s campaign declares debate a success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RmRDhIrd3kI\/AAAAAAAACfU\/pCGmBtOfw6M\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RmRDhIrd3kI\/AAAAAAAACfU\/pCGmBtOfw6M\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5072253316870561346\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> campaign was pleased with his showing in Sunday\u2019s Democratic candidate debate.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> \u201cfirmly established himself as the candidate with the strongest positions on the key challenges facing this country and showed that he is the most qualified to be the next president of the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United   States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>,\u201d the campaign declared in a news release after the debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe other candidates have policy positions, and Bill Richardson has real-world experience dealing with those challenges,\u201d said David Contarino, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign manager. \u201cTonight, he separated himself from the other candidates and showed voters in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state> and across the country that he will be a strong and effective president that can bring this country together and restore <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s standing in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Reactions from political pundits were mixed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/568261nm06-04-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> spoke with three political observers. Two gave Richardson a \u201cC+\u201d and one gave him a \u201cB.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m not quite sure he advanced his cause very much,\u201d Tim Kraft of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, who has worked on several presidential campaigns and worked in the Carter Administration, told the Journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe did better than the first debate, but he needs to be more compelling and more concise in his responses,\u201d pollster Brian Sanderoff told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> did above average,\u201d <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> political science professor Andrew Smith, the one who gave Richardson a \u201cB,\u201d told the Journal. \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody was a real \u2018A\u2019 tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">David Yepsen, a columnist for the <a href=\"http:\/\/desmoinesregister.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070604\/OPINION01\/706040341\/1035\/OPINION&#038;GID=xu5sPd3dodypzGO5Gix9dmgkG42qmUFW1pzcqvl02kg%3D\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines Register<\/a>, on the other hand, said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u201cwas practically invisible during the first half of the session.\u201d He didn\u2019t indicate whether he believed that was due to a poor showing by <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> or the format of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a> debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That was the only mention <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> got in Yepsen\u2019s column. Yepsen was kind to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> when most others were not after the <a href=\"http:\/\/desmoinesregister.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070427\/OPINION01\/704270406\" target=\"_blank\">first debate in April<\/a>, writing that he gave a solid performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">CNN\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ELECTION\/2008\/debates\/scorecard\/\" target=\"_blank\">three analysts<\/a> said <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> gave the most disappointing performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wasn\u2019t mentioned in most other articles I found about the debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But his support is holding steady in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. A new poll, out today, finds him at 10 percent, confirming similar support in three other polls conducted in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The newest poll, done by <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dmregister.com\/?cat=53\" target=\"_blank\">Public Policy Polling<\/a>, was conducted May 30. It surveyed 1,238 likely Democratic caucusgoers and has a margin of error of 2.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> leading the Democratic contenders in the important state with 31 percent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> each had 17 percent, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was in fourth. No other candidate had more than 4 percent in the poll, and 17 percent of those surveyed were undecided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The next round of polling, which will take the latest debate into account, should be interesting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:35 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I wrote Sunday evening about three <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> voters interviewed after the debate. Two of them said they liked <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.
