\"\"<\/a>This video of Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> talking about his energy plan is interesting because it illustrates what an unconvincing job he often does when talking to a camera. <\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is brilliant in one-on-one settings or crowds. He\u2019s mediocre in debates. When he\u2019s talking to a camera, he\u2019s often horrible.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

I\u2019m assuming that\u2019s because Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> takes so many cues from the facial expressions and other non-verbal communication of those around him.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

If you watch this video, it will be clear that Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is reading off cue cards. His voice and face lack emotion. Listening to him say, \u201cMy plan is bold and aggressive \u2013 a real man-on-the-moon plan,\u201d with no energy is not only unconvincing, it\u2019s uninspiring \u2013 the opposite of the John F. Kennedy<\/a> image he\u2019s trying to invoke. I can picture John Edwards<\/a> or Barack Obama<\/a> saying the same thing, and they would look excited about the world-changing program they are proposing.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

I can hear it now: \u201cBut Heath, I\u2019m not a rock star.\u201d True, but one important aspect of being presidential is having the ability to inspire. Richardson<\/st1:city> can do it when he\u2019s talking to small groups, which works fine in a small state like New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. As president, he\u2019s going to be talking to cameras a lot.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t picture Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, speaking the way he does on this video, addressing the nation from the Oval Office. Can he do better?<\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
