It\u2019s the lowest approval rating for the senator since at least May 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The survey of 600 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By comparison, those surveyed gave U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., a 63 percent approval rating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bingaman\u2019s approval was up from 60 percent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=d6693599-b423-4cb3-9c0e-48287d4181a9\" target=\"_blank\">in April<\/a>. Domenici\u2019s was down from 54 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Last month, support for Domenici among democrats fell below 50 percent \u2013 to 49 percent \u2013 for the first time in the poll\u2019s history. This month it fell again, to 39 percent. That\u2019s significant because it should give the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party of New Mexico<\/a> hope that it can find a strong challenger to take on the senator next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the last month, Domenici\u2019s support among republicans has fallen from 74 percent to 71 percent, but his support among independents has risen from 38 percent to 41 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The company\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=2e180af0-a86b-4a1f-b344-14bd16b4e31b\" target=\"_blank\">February survey<\/a>, the last conducted before the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney scandal broke, had Domenici\u2019s overall approval rating at 64 percent. Among republicans, he had a 79-percent approval rating that month. Among democrats, he had a 62-percent approval rating, and 55 percent of independents said they approved of the job he was doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s still an ongoing inquiry by the Senate Ethics Committee into whether Domenici violated Senate rules in calling former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a> in October to inquire about an ongoing public corruption probe. His approval rating might continue to drop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Two lesser-known democrats are running against Domenici next year, but the party has yet to find a prominent candidate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
