{"id":1770,"date":"2007-05-23T16:29:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-23T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/former-doj-official-testifies-on-u-s-attorney-firings\/"},"modified":"2007-05-23T16:29:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-23T22:29:00","slug":"former-doj-official-testifies-on-u-s-attorney-firings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/former-doj-official-testifies-on-u-s-attorney-firings\/","title":{"rendered":"Former DOJ official testifies on U.S. attorney firings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Former Department of Justice staffer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monica_Goodling\" target=\"_blank\">Monica Goodling<\/a>, who was involved in the firings of eight former <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorneys last year, shed no new light on why <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a> and others were ousted, but made a number of tantalizing statements that are sure to ramp up the controversy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goodling, who was granted immunity in exchange for her testimony after she originally refused to appear before a <a href=\"http:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Judiciary<\/a> subcommittee because she didn\u2019t want to incriminate herself, said she had limited involvement in the firings and could shed little light on why the attorneys were fired, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070523\/ap_on_go_co\/fired_prosecutors;_ylt=AjE5t2zVwyXTXIXWVdeXKPrMWM0F\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She did, however, tell the committee that Deputy Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_McNulty\" target=\"_blank\">Paul McNulty<\/a> knew more than he told Congress about the extent of White House involvement in the firings, and said he falsely accused her of withholding details from him before he gave incorrect testimony before Congress several weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe the deputy was not fully candid,\u201d Goodling said, according to the news service. \u201c\u2026 I didn\u2019t withhold information from the deputy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McNulty disputed that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMs. Goodling&#8217;s characterization of my testimony is wrong and not supported by the extensive record of documents and testimony already provided to Congress,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goodling also admitted that, in considering candidates for jobs, she gave too much weight to their political affiliation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe I crossed the lines,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t mean to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Goodling and another high-ranking staffer have resigned over the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney scandal, and McNulty is leaving later this year.
