{"id":17549,"date":"2010-05-20T22:31:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T04:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=17549"},"modified":"2010-05-20T22:31:40","modified_gmt":"2010-05-21T04:31:40","slug":"king-seeks-to-have-sloan-removed-from-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/05\/king-seeks-to-have-sloan-removed-from-office\/","title":{"rendered":"King seeks to have Sloan removed from office"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15870\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15870\" title=\"Sloan, Carol\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Sloan-Carol1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carol Sloan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Public Regulation Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmprc.state.nm.us\/commissioner4.htm\">Carol Sloan<\/a> was sentenced today to five years on probation for felony convictions of aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.<\/p>\n<p>Being a convicted felon makes Sloan ineligible to hold office, and Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/nmag.gov\/office\/Divisions\/EO\/kingbio.aspx\">Gary King<\/a> filed a petition with the New Mexico Supreme Court asking that she be removed from the position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office petitioned the court for Carol Sloan\u2019s removal based on grounds that she was convicted on April 8, 2010 of aggravated burglary, a second-degree felony, and aggravated battery, a third-degree felony,\u201d King said in a news release. \u201cToday she was sentenced for those crimes which, according to New Mexico law, means she can no longer remain in public office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You can read the petition <a href=\"http:\/\/nmag.gov\/pdf\/sloan%20writ.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan was convicted of attacking another woman with a rock because she believed the woman was having an affair with her husband. She is appealing the conviction.<\/p>\n<p>She was technically sentenced today to five years in prison \u2013 a sentence that was suspended as long as she completes supervised probation and pays $3,500 in fines and court fees.<\/p>\n<p>If Sloan is removed, the governor would appoint her replacement, who would serve until the winner of the November election takes office in January.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Public Regulation Commissioner Carol Sloan was sentenced today to five years on probation for felony convictions of aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.
