{"id":17529,"date":"2010-05-20T11:24:45","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T17:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=17529"},"modified":"2010-05-20T11:24:46","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T17:24:46","slug":"afscme-state-local-groups-spar-over-endorsements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/05\/afscme-state-local-groups-spar-over-endorsements\/","title":{"rendered":"AFSCME state, local groups spar over endorsements"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16605\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16605\" title=\"Jones, Sandy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Jones-Sandy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sandy Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Democratic Land Commissioner candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonesforlandcommissioner.com\/\">Sandy Jones<\/a> announced earlier this week that he had been endorsed by three local <a href=\"http:\/\/afscme.org\/\">AFSCME<\/a> units in New Mexico, but the union\u2019s state council, whose political committee has endorsed Jones\u2019 opponent <a href=\"http:\/\/raypowell4land.com\/\">Ray Powell<\/a>, says there\u2019s no such thing as an endorsement from a local unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Jones campaign claimed the endorsements of AFSCME <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/05\/colon-jones-announce-new-endorsements\/\">locals 2777, 477 and 2890<\/a>, representing about 2,000 members, earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>But a statement from AFSCME Council 18, which represents New Mexico, says that while union members \u201care always entitled to support whatever candidate they choose as individuals, individuals do not and cannot make an \u2018AFSCME\u2019 endorsement in a statewide race, and AFSCME Council 18 and all of its locals proudly stand 100 percent behind the endorsement of\u00a0Ray Powell\u00a0for Land Commissioner.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17079\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17079\" title=\"Powell, Ray\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Powell-Ray.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ray Powell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is only one AFSCME endorsement process and one AFSCME endorsement in statewide races, and that includes all locals,\u201d Council President Andrew Padilla said in the statement. \u201cThe resolution governing all AFSCME endorsements in\u00a0New Mexico\u00a0clearly states that \u2018the PEOPLE by-laws constitute the official endorsement process for the Council, and all locals, for the state of New Mexico.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arcy Baca, the president of Local 477, disputes that.
