The mother says <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s version of their encounter is a lie, but the governor\u2019s campaign isn\u2019t backing down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The newest poll, released Sunday by the <a href=\"http:\/\/desmoinesregister.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/section?category=iowapoll07\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines Register<\/a>, has <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> becoming a player in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> at 10 percent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> leads the Democratic candidates there with 29 percent, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> is in second with 23 percent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> is in third with 21 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> is climbing in many other states, she\u2019s dropping in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Her fall in that state threatens her campaign despite her popularity elsewhere, and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is the only state keeping Edwards\u2019 campaign alive. Since <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> holds the first primary contest, it has the potential to sway voters in every other state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">No other candidate had more than 3 percent in the poll, which surveyed 400 likely Democratic caucus goers between May 12 and 16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The last few weeks have likely gone exactly as the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> campaign planned. He began his climb in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, where a poll has him at 6 percent. He unveiled the first television ads of any Democrat in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Hampshire<\/st1:state>, and saw his support jump to 5 percent in one <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> poll. Then he unveiled humorous television ads as he continued traveling around the nation at an exhausting pace, and has since seen support jump to 10 percent in the polls in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOur strategy is simple and it\u2019s working,\u201d Campaign Manager Dave Contarino said. \u201cWe have focused Governor\u2019s time and campaign resources in those early states to demonstrate that once people hear of Bill Richardson\u2019s extraordinary record and get to know him, support and the campaign\u2019s momentum would grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> plans to use the momentum to his benefit by formally announcing his presidential run today in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Los Angeles<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. That includes a new Web site you can check out by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Will soldier\u2019s mother throw a kink in plans?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But there\u2019s the issue of the soldier\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has often spoken on the campaign trail about how he was inspired to create a $250,000 death benefit for the families of killed National Guard members in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> by of the low amount Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin\u2019s mother received from the federal government, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/new_hampshire\/articles\/2007\/05\/20\/mother_of_fallen_marine_says_richardson_misrepresented_conversation_with_her\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> reported in a weekend article.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Austin<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was 21 when he was killed in April 2004. <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> says <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Austin<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s mother, at her son\u2019s funeral, thanked him for the federal check of $11,000 and showed it to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The mother, De\u2019on Miller of Lovington, told the news service that never happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhy would I discuss it with him at a memorial son for my son? I\u2019m still in shock. I\u2019m not busy thanking him,\u201d she told the news service. \u201c\u2026 I got the feeling he\u2019s trying to use us to make us sound like little <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/podunk\" target=\"_blank\">podunks<\/a> or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She had stronger words in a second <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/R\/RICHARDSON_2008?SITE=NMALJ&#038;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBill Richardson needs to stop pushing this lie,\u201d she told the news service. \u201cAaron\u2019s name had better not be used again in any way. Not mine either. A full written apology is due me for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>, the news service reported, has gotten <st1:city st=\"on\">Austin<\/st1:city>\u2019s name wrong at least once and his age wrong at least twice in speeches in <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Hampshire<\/st1:state>, and he\u2019s also said <st1:city st=\"on\">Austin<\/st1:city> was the first <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> soldier killed in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, when he was the third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Those who watch <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> closely know attention to detail isn\u2019t his strongest attribute and that he does, at times, embellish or rearrange facts to emphasize points. He usually gets away with it, but the dispute about whether <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Austin<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s mother showed him a check could change that. It could upset veterans and the families of soldiers, and it may also cause the media to more closely scrutinize everything <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> says to look for inconsistencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> campaign is standing by what the governor has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cGov. Richardson learned of the low federal death benefit from Corporal Austin\u2019s mother at the funeral,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Pahl Shipley told the news service. \u201cThat inspired the governor to fight for a higher death benefit for New Mexico National Guard soldiers. He was proud to propose, support and sign legislation raising that benefit, which is now $400,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Standing toe-to-toe with the mother of a killed soldier who is accusing you of lying is a bold move for a presidential candidate, but it may also be foolish. Time will tell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Party of New Mexico<\/a> has jumped on this one with a news release:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cFirst and foremost, I want Aaron\u2019s mother to know that we truly appreciate her son\u2019s sacrifice for our country, and we\u2019re sorry that she has to go through any more heartache,\u201d Chairman Allen Weh said. \u201cGov. Richardson\u2019s lack of respect for Aaron\u2019s sacrifice is absurd, and I emphatically join Aaron\u2019s mother in demanding an apology from him for the way he has treated this family and this fallen marine.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chris Atencio, acting executive director of the party, said, \u201cIt\u2019s one thing when Richardson lies about being drafted to a major league baseball team, but it is entirely another when he tries to bolster his personal image at the expense of a brave New Mexican and his family who gave the ultimate sacrifice. And now his staff is implying that Mrs. Miller is lying. Again, we stand with Mrs. Miller in demanding an apology, and we hope he\u2019ll heed her request that neither Aaron\u2019s nor her name will be used by him again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
