{"id":1736,"date":"2007-05-17T09:49:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-17T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/sun-news-wraps-up-series-on-development\/"},"modified":"2007-05-17T09:49:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-17T15:49:00","slug":"sun-news-wraps-up-series-on-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/sun-news-wraps-up-series-on-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun-News wraps up series on development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> wrapped up its five-day series on growth and development today with an overview of what\u2019s been happening in the last few years and a look at how rapid growth only spurs more rapid growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The retail growth was the most staggering point in the Sun-News\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_5914215\" target=\"_blank\">main article<\/a> in today\u2019s package: Since 2000, Las Cruces has gone from having one Wal-Mart Supercenter to having two and a Sam\u2019s Club, and it\u2019s gone from having no Starbucks to having four (the Sun-New erroneously said three) with another two already under construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition, here\u2019s what the Sun-News didn\u2019t report: Wal-Mart is looking land for a third Las Cruces store on U.S. Highway 70, and Target is currently working a deal to build its second Las Cruces store on Highway 70. Kohl\u2019s is already building on the city\u2019s north side, and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Circuit<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">City<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> is also looking for land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The growth really is staggering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_5914212\" target=\"_blank\">second article<\/a>, the newspaper took a look at the debate about whether the growth is good and the effort by local governments to develop a regional growth plan. The article was good, but I wish the newspaper had devoted more space to looking into the aspects of open space and comparing <st1:city st=\"on\">Las  Cruces<\/st1:city> to other cities, to give us some context on whether <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is growing in a way that is smart and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Overall, the newspaper did a good job of providing some needed context to the current debate.
