{"id":1730,"date":"2007-05-16T10:56:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-16T16:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/newspaper-looks-at-growths-impact-on-schools\/"},"modified":"2007-05-16T10:56:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-16T16:56:00","slug":"newspaper-looks-at-growths-impact-on-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/newspaper-looks-at-growths-impact-on-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Newspaper looks at growth&#8217;s impact on schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As part of its continuing series on growth, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_5905571\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> today examined the impact on schools and the difficulties the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcps.k12.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Public Schools<\/a> is having keeping up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A couple of interesting points: In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_5905563\" target=\"_blank\">second article<\/a>, the newspaper reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico State University<\/a> is prepared for growth and, with its current infrastructure, can handle 15 percent growth. That\u2019s quite a contrast to LCPS, which is struggling to keep up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Also interesting is the fact that the school district has been largely kept out of the loop on development. Its officials didn\u2019t know about the current and controversial <st1:place st=\"on\">East Mesa<\/st1:place> development under consideration by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces City Council<\/a>, The Vistas at Presidio, until recently. The school district has no representation on the Extraterritorial Zoning Authority or other boards that keep track of and regulate growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That should change.
