Domenici is easily raising a great deal of money and Democrats have, thus far, been unable to find a known candidate to run against him.

Domenici has drawn challenges from lesser-known Democrats Jim Hannan and Leland Lehrman.

The article quoted Matt Farrauto, executive director of the state Democratic Party, as saying that, at last month’s party meeting in Las Cruces, the talk was about taking on Domenici.

“We’ll give Domenici the race of his life,” Farrauto told the publication.

But I was quoted in the article as saying that a number of New Mexico Democrats aren’t so optimistic. My experience in talking to Democrats is that many in Washington believe Domenici is vulnerable, but many in New Mexico doubt that.

University of New Mexico political scientist Christine Sierra agreed that Domenici won’t likely face a scenario where he’s vulnerable.

I also discussed the divide in the state Republican Party revealed by last month’s leadership battle.

The article also ran on the New York Times’ Web site.
