The governor announced today that the health secretary is leaving her job to run for office.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think I should run for? Is there an office in Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> that I should add to the list?\u201d she asked when I asked what office she would seek.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Grisham said she is \u201cabsolutely\u201d considering running against U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M. next year, or for Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> mayor in 2009. Mayor Marty Ch\u00e1vez<\/a> is considering running for governor in 2010 and hasn\u2019t yet announced if he\u2019ll seek re-election in 2009.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

She said she hasn\u2019t thought much about running against U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., or for the Albuquerque City Council next year, but would if others think she should. She\u2019s open to other races, too.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m meeting with folks to determine which office,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve got my eyes set on 2008, but 2010 isn\u2019t out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Grisham has come under fire recently. Several top employees of the department have left over concerns about her management style. But she said she is choosing to leave the department only because she wants to seek elected office.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing like that is forcing me out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Grisham has wanted to run for office for years, she said, and became \u201cworried that if I don\u2019t do this now that I\u2019m never going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

A run against Ch\u00e1vez, a fellow Democrat and popular mayor, would be controversial. If she opted to take on Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, she\u2019d have a primary against Democrat and current Albuquerque City Councilor Martin Heinrich<\/a>.<\/p>\n
