Though there has been no related violence in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Columbus<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, victims have fled to the port of entry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI want to ensure that we are doing everything possible to keep New Mexicans in this community safe,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As a result of <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s order, State Police have indefinitely increased patrols in and around the town of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Columbus<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, located south of Deming. Officers are also working with U.S. Customs agents to form a roadblock in <st1:city st=\"on\">Columbus<\/st1:city> to check every vehicle going into <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The violence has escalated this week. On Monday, two men were killed and a third was seriously injured when a man with an AK-47 fired on their sport utility vehicle. A fourth man steered the vehicle after the shooting into the Columbus Port of Entry, where he was arrested for entering the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> illegally with a firearm, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demingheadlight.com\/news\/ci_5847555\" target=\"_blank\">Deming Headlight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Earlier today, another shooting left an American who lives and works in Palomas seriously injured, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvia.com\/global\/story.asp?s=6491930\" target=\"_blank\">KVIA<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Moments after officials heard gunfire, the man arrived at the border station with multiple gunshot wounds and driving a vehicle that had dozens of bullet holes. He\u2019s being treated at <st1:placename st=\"on\">Thomason<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Hospital<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">El   Paso<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RkJG_8C6zZI\/AAAAAAAACRI\/MQgQ_uA_UjQ\/s1600-h\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RkJG_8C6zZI\/AAAAAAAACRI\/MQgQ_uA_UjQ\/s200\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062686995381931410\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In addition to increasing state police patrols, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> is working with U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> to ensure there is an appropriate federal response. Bingaman spokeswoman Jude McCartin said her office is in contact with the governor, State Department and Border Patrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is determine what steps can be taken on our side of the border,\u201d she said. \u201cIt looks like a pretty serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> declared a state of emergency along the Mexican border in 2005 that freed up money for local law enforcement agencies. He also convinced the governor of <st1:state st=\"on\">Chihuahua<\/st1:state> that year to raze a number of buildings in the border <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">village<\/st1:placetype> of  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Las Chepas<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, which was being used as a staging point for drug and human smuggling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 5\/10\/07, 6:55 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RkMV1cC6zcI\/AAAAAAAACRg\/QeeGpoXBrFw\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RkMV1cC6zcI\/AAAAAAAACRg\/QeeGpoXBrFw\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062914413900254658\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Bingaman and Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> have written a letter to Secretary of State <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Condoleezza Rice<\/a> to call attention to the violence and ask her to encourage the Mexican government to address the situation. The senators suggested that Rice consider issuing a notice to constituents and travelers in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They also announced that they sent staffers to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Luna<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> to be briefed on the violence and offered to try to help assist local communities in dealing with the situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
