No one has officially declared their candidacy for the seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m leaning towards it,\u201d Chavez said. \u201cA non-partisan race is pretty attractive to me. I can get a lot done. I\u2019m a loyal Republican, but I really do consider myself to be a Las Crucen first and foremost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chavez\u2019s wife is pregnant with their first child, who is due in about a month. In addition, they are in the process of selling a Laundromat they own. Chavez said he wants to sell the business and make sure the birth goes well before deciding whether to run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he expects to make a decision by July. Candidates won\u2019t file for the Nov. 6 election until August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But Chavez is clearly serious about a potential run. He has been attending meetings of the council and other city boards for a couple of months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chavez ran a competitive race against Nu\u00f1ez last year, raising almost $70,000 and coming within eight percent of beating the popular incumbent. If he doesn\u2019t run for city council, Chavez said he will probably run for Nu\u00f1ez\u2019s seat again in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nu\u00f1ez, who was named chair of the Agriculture and Water Resources Committee this year, said he plans to seek re-election and welcomes another challenge from Chavez. He said Chavez needs to hold a position like city councilor to build credibility before he can be elected to the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the main issues in the city election will be <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019 rapid growth. Chavez, who has a commercial real estate license and is co-owner of a company that plans to fly people\u2019s ashes into space for a fee, said he is \u201cpro-growth.\u201d However, Chavez is also a fifth-generation Las Crucen who has seen family members lose farmland to the city\u2019s rapid expansion. He said he is \u201cstuck in the middle\u201d of the controversial debate about how <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> should grow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI want the city to grow, but I want it to grow in the right way,\u201d Chavez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chavez\u2019s father is a first cousin of Las Cruces Mayor Pro-Tem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district2.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Dolores Connor<\/a>, but Chavez said that won\u2019t be a factor in whether he runs. He said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is a small town, and many public officials are related to other public officials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Isaac Chavez, who failed in a bid to unseat state Rep.
