Senior political reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/authors\/dave-levinthal\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Levinthal<\/a> is on the ground in Cleveland.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>CELEBRATE DIVERSITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6:24 p.m. Saturday, July 16: <\/strong>On Wednesday evening, AT&amp;T, agriculture titan Cargill and liquor giant Diageo are among the sponsors of &#8220;A Celebration of Diversity&#8221; \u2014 a festive gathering at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium that will fete several minority- or women-focused government relations\/lobbying organizations: Washington Government Relations Group, Hispanic Lobbyists Association), H Street, Q Street, Women in Government Relations and Professional Women in Advocacy.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>About this article<\/h3>\n<p>This story comes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/07\/16\/19924\/influence-diaries-dispatches-republican-national-convention\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Public Integrity<\/a>, a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative media organization in Washington, D.C. But they&#8217;re apparently not in the mood for celebrating diversity with people who might &#8230; report on their celebrating. &#8220;I am sorry but the sponsors of the event do not wish to invite press to attend,&#8221; event associate\u00a0LeeAnn Petersen told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Public Integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what we do know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/2993254-Diversity-Flier-5-3-for-WED-Night-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to an invitation<\/a>: a top-shelf &#8220;platinum&#8221; event sponsorship scores you &#8220;premier visibility on all marketing materials associated with the event including invitations, flyer and signage at the event,&#8221; as well as a &#8220;speaking role&#8221; and 25 event tickets.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to celebrating diversity in general, the event is designed to &#8220;recognize elected leaders who come from or support diverse backgrounds and constituencies.&#8221; Organizers are certain to point out that the event is &#8220;planned to comply with all laws and Congressional Ethics Rules.&#8221; The same groups are also gathering during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Cargill&#8217;s event sponsorship, spokesman Pete Stoddart told the Center for Public Integrity: &#8220;We are sponsoring this event at both the Republican and Democratic conventions to advance and promote inclusion and diversity in the workplace.\u201d He declined to say whether Cargill requested the event be closed to the press. Representatives for AT&amp;T and Diageo did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Dave Levinthal<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>WITHER DONALD?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2:47 p.m., Saturday, July 16: <\/strong>Fly into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clevelandairport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Hopkins International Airport<\/a> on a\u00a0Saturday\u00a0morning flight from Washington, D.C., the weekend before the Republican National Convention, and you\u2019ll see plenty of familiar faces.<\/p>\n<p>Over there is CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaketapper\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Tapper<\/a> graciously taking selfies with a young fan as he waits at the United Airlines baggage claim.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s PBS News Hour\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudyWoodruff\" target=\"_blank\">Judy Woodruff<\/a>, stretching her legs with a small entourage after enduring a ride in the decidedly claustrophobic coach section.<\/p>\n<p>One thing you won\u2019t find? Almost anything to do with <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/07\/why-i-do-this-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who\u2019s set to formally accept the Republican presidential nomination later this week at Cleveland\u2019s Quicken Loans Arena.<\/p>\n<p>In this Trump-free zone, there are\u00a0no massive banners. No gaudy imagery. Even toothy Trump t-shirts or Donald-themed swag are nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n<p>Based on initial airport impressions alone, it\u2019d seem equally plausible that some politico other than Trump \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2015\/03\/23\/16947\/ted-cruzs-presidential-cash-hunt-commences\" target=\"_blank\">Ted Cruz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitt_Romney\" target=\"_blank\">Mitt Romney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wendell_Willkie\" target=\"_blank\">Wendell Willkie<\/a> \u2014 is headlining the upcoming Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe basketball royalty <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingJames\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a>, whose face is everywhere. Or the cape-clad Man of Steel, who lords over an exhibition that declares, \u201cDid you know <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davelevinthal\/status\/754368155577880576\" target=\"_blank\">Superman<\/a> was created in Cleveland?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Cleveland 2016 Host Committee \u2014 a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization designed to raise money (latest: it\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2016\/07\/15\/cleveland-host-committee-confirms-that-it-sought-6-million-from-adelsons-to-fill-funding-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\">begging<\/a>\u00a0GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson for cash) and manage Republican National Convention affairs \u2014 itself has rolled out a decidedly minimalistic red carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving convention delegates, journalists, political operatives and assorted lobbyists and will see some maroon-and-blue \u201cWe the people welcome you to Cleveland\u201d signs and perhaps be greeted with a free bottle of water from a friendly volunteer in a white host committee polo shirt featuring the logo of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/gen\/investor-relations?pid=5711\" target=\"_blank\">AT&amp;T<\/a> \u2014 one of the major companies lending its brand and services to the Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>Many other major corporations, though, have kept a lower profile here at the airport, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/07\/07\/19899\/special-interests-look-influence-political-conventions-discreetly\" target=\"_blank\">fits a pattern<\/a> for many special interests: don\u2019t be too obvious when supporting the Republican National Convention and a shoot-from-the-mouth candidate in Trump who has taken more than a couple of\u00a0controversial policy stances.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t so much apply to local companies. Several arriving conventioneers, for example, seemed genuinely impressed by a billboard sponsored by Ohio-based Duck Tape brand duct tape.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Dave Levinthal<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>LET\u2019S GET THIS PARTY STARTED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1:40 p.m., Saturday, July 16:<\/strong> The Republican convention committee may be scrambling to raise a final few million dollars for the show, but corporations, unions and special interests have already given tens of millions of dollars toward businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2015\/06\/16\/17488\/9-things-know-about-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s official anointing as the Republican presidential nominee.<\/p>\n<p>The Cleveland host committee \u2014 a nonprofit organization that exists to fund and operate the Republican convention \u2014 doesn\u2019t have to reveal its donors until 60 days after the convention. But the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Public Integrity<\/a> has already unearthed some major backers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.key.com\/corporate\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">KeyCorp<\/a>, which is based in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>Some companies have pulled back, nervous about the controversial nominee. Others are finding quieter ways to give \u2014 such as sponsoring private parties that don\u2019t have to be disclosed, but allow them to rub elbows with lawmakers.
