Last year, when approving that salary, the regents also gave him a bonus equal to 10 percent of his salary for outstanding work.

They might do it again. Though Martin has critics and has had his share of controversies, many things are going well at NMSU.

A number of buildings have been renovated, including the Pan American Center, which allowed the university to successfully host the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments this year. The university will also host next year’s WAC volleyball tournament, the conference announced this week.

And just last week, the regents approved a historic union contract with employees that was the result of hard work by Martin and a lot of others. The contract comes with pay raises and increases in university contributions to employee health insurance plans.

He’s been recruited by other universities, but Martin says he likes what’s happening in Las Cruces and wants to stay here. Martin has widespread support among the regents, so the extension and pay raise should be no-brainers. His expected three-year contract extension would run through 2011. Martin first came to NMSU in 2004.

The regents are also expected to approve next fiscal year’s budget at the meeting.

Members of the New Mexico State University Board of Regents are expected to approve a contract extension for President Michael Martin on Friday that comes with a hefty salary increase.
