That sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=go9P3thR4as\" target=\"_blank\">an outcry<\/a> from team members who said they were only notified of the decision that day and it was too late to transfer to another university and compete this year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>Watch<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ZljsbPt5-I?rel=0\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers shares his message for employees who are impacted by the university&#8217;s $12.1 million in budget reductions and his message for NMSU students and their parents\/guardians. You can also watch <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0ZljsbPt5-I\" target=\"_blank\">on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Chancellor Garrey Carruthers said in a news release that NMSU&#8217;s students &#8220;are incredibly important to us,&#8221; and the university &#8220;should have given more notice to our equestrian team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This final season will give them an opportunity to compete and to seek other opportunities if they choose,&#8221; Carruthers said. &#8220;I have shared this decision with the chair of our Board of Regents and she concurs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This will be the final season NMSU will fund the team, the university said in its news release.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the NMSU equestrian program are seeking private funding to make the program self-sustaining. Team members are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/story\/news\/education\/nmsu\/2016\/07\/14\/nmsu-equestrian-team-launches-gofundme-campaign\/87101542\/\" target=\"_blank\">seeking donations<\/a> to help.<\/p>\n<p>NMSU &#8220;supports this approach as advocates for the program work to fund the program at a competitive level,&#8221; the university&#8217;s news release states.<\/p>\n<p>NMSU is working to address a $12.1 million budget shortfall\u00a0in the current fiscal year that\u00a0was largely caused by cuts in state funding for the university and decreased student enrollment. To help balance the budget, the Board of Regents recently\u00a0approved <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/06\/nmsu-regents-ok-employee-benefit-cuts-more-may-be-needed\/\" target=\"_blank\">reductions in some employee benefits<\/a>,\u00a0including annual and sick leave and health and other insurance. Carruthers and many other high-ranking university employees have <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/06\/carruthers-other-high-paid-nmsu-employees-taking-pay-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">taken pay cuts<\/a> that are expected to save $190,000 a year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Also on Wednesday, <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/07\/nmsu-cuts-on-campus-employee-health-services-equestrian-team-surveying-engineering-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">the university announced<\/a>\u00a0that it is\u00a0outsourcing employee health services to a private clinic\u00a0and eliminating\u00a0the surveying engineering\u00a0degree program.
