{"id":1686,"date":"2007-05-07T12:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-07T18:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/richardson-gains-in-newest-nevada-poll-but-shifting-primary-calendar-means-he-needs-to-climb-faster\/"},"modified":"2007-05-07T12:10:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-07T18:10:00","slug":"richardson-gains-in-newest-nevada-poll-but-shifting-primary-calendar-means-he-needs-to-climb-faster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/richardson-gains-in-newest-nevada-poll-but-shifting-primary-calendar-means-he-needs-to-climb-faster\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson gains in newest Nevada poll, but shifting primary calendar means he needs to climb faster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rj9r1sC6zMI\/AAAAAAAACPg\/GbZvRFKlg_4\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rj9r1sC6zMI\/AAAAAAAACPg\/GbZvRFKlg_4\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5061883076288367810\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A week after a poll showed support for Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> presidential run jump in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state>, another finds him creeping up in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The new poll has <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> at 6 percent in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> \u2013 better than the 2-3 percent reflected in previous polls, but still far short of any of the frontrunners in the race to be the Democrats\u2019 2008 presidential nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Last week, a <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/richardson-sees-significant-gain-in-new.html\">poll<\/a> showed support for <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> jump from 1 percent to 5 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Nevada poll, conducted for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/news\/7358326.html\" target=\"_blank\">Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/a>, had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> way ahead of everyone else with 37 percent. It had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> at 13 percent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> at 12 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s hard to figure out how to interpret this poll because it allowed people to select <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al_gore\" target=\"_blank\">Al Gore<\/a>, who isn\u2019t running for president, and 9 percent said they support him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The poll, conducted April 30-May 2, surveyed 300 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though the poll shows a gain for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, it isn\u2019t cause for his campaign to be ecstatic. He\u2019s still within the margin of error and, more importantly, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is gaining in a number of important states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She\u2019s losing ground in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state>, but <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> has gained in polls recently in <st1:state st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Florida<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Ohio<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Pennsylvania<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/in-iowa-richardson-continues-pledge-to.html\">staked his presidential bid<\/a> on four states that until last week held the earliest primaries \u2013 <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. Last week, however, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/cq\/2007\/05\/04\/cq_2679.html\" target=\"_blank\">Florida moved its contest<\/a> up to Jan. 29 \u2013 the same day as South Carolina\u2019s \u2013 and it\u2019s becoming increasingly impossible to predict which states will matter most in determining which candidate gets the party\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When it appeared he would only need to compete in four, small states, it seemed that <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> could keep up with <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and other frontrunners. But having to compete in the four smaller states plus a number of large states that plan to hold their primaries in late January or early February makes it increasingly difficult for Richardson to keep up with candidates who have more money and larger organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So the gains in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> are important for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign, but he needs more positive movement in the polls, and it needs to happen quickly, if he\u2019s to have any shot at the nomination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A week after a poll showed support for Gov.
