To help balance the budget, the Board of Regents recently\u00a0approved <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/06\/nmsu-regents-ok-employee-benefit-cuts-more-may-be-needed\/\" target=\"_blank\">reductions in some employee benefits<\/a>,\u00a0including annual and sick leave and health and other insurance. Carruthers and many other high-ranking university employees have <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/06\/carruthers-other-high-paid-nmsu-employees-taking-pay-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">taken pay cuts<\/a> that are expected to save $190,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p>But the Regents\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/story\/news\/education\/nmsu\/2016\/04\/04\/nmsu-regents-say-no-tuition-hike\/82639018\/\" target=\"_blank\">rejected a proposed tuition increase<\/a> to help cover the shortfall in April, and additional cuts are\u00a0needed.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/04\/proposed-cuts-to-employee-benefits-stir-controversy-at-nmsu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eliminating the\u00a0Employee Health Center<\/a>\u00a0is among the possibilities that has been discussed.<\/p>\n<p>The Regents plan to hold a public meeting on Wednesday to discuss the situation. Carruthers&#8217; Tuesday memo announcing the job cuts says the administration will share its &#8220;budget reduction plan for the current fiscal year&#8221; at the meeting, which\u00a0is being held\u00a0in Yates Auditorium, located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Domenici+hall\/@32.2817075,-106.7531996,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x86de17bf1a480a95:0x9a587d3ced64e3d3!8m2!3d32.2817075!4d-106.7510109?hl=en-US\" target=\"_blank\">Domenici Hall<\/a>\u00a0on the main campus in Las Cruces.
