{"id":1676,"date":"2007-05-03T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-03T23:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/criticism-of-lyons-continues-over-cruces-land-deal\/"},"modified":"2007-05-03T17:06:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-03T23:06:00","slug":"criticism-of-lyons-continues-over-cruces-land-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/05\/criticism-of-lyons-continues-over-cruces-land-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Criticism of Lyons continues over Cruces land deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RjprH8C6zBI\/AAAAAAAACOI\/U-5GX25dLtg\/s1600-h\/Lyons,+Pat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RjprH8C6zBI\/AAAAAAAACOI\/U-5GX25dLtg\/s200\/Lyons,+Pat.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060474915425799186\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The criticism of state Land Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmstatelands.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Lyons\u2019<\/a> deal with a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> developer is continuing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a column <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruidosonews.com\/columnists\/ci_5794128\" target=\"_blank\">published earlier this week<\/a> in several newspapers around the state, Ned Cantwell slamed Lyons for taking campaign contributions from a political action committee that is run by two men, one of them a lobbyist for the developer who gave the money to the PAC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The sticky point is that <st1:city st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:city> then gave the developer two leases on thousands of acres of state land around <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. In case you missed it, you can find the details by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/lyons-is-latest-to-prove-need-for.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What\u2019s infuriating, Cantwell wrote, is <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019 assertion that he didn\u2019t know the PAC money came from the developer. Though Cantwell admits that it may be true, he says <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> should have known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLyons and other politicians who claim to be above all the nasty money changing need to get real. Give this simple instruction to your campaign people: \u2018I want you to find the source of all campaign donations, and if there is even a hint of conflict of interest, I want you to refuse the money,\u2019\u201d Cantwell wrote. \u201cIs that so hard?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It wouldn\u2019t be hard, and it\u2019s a great point. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> could have avoided this criticism by refusing to take the money. Then there wouldn\u2019t be even an appearance of conflict or impropriety in the land deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But it\u2019s not like <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was all that concerned about avoiding such an appearance. The developer of a huge project in <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city> gave $35,000 directly to <st1:city st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:city>\u2019 campaign, without funneling it through a <st1:place st=\"on\">PAC.<\/st1:place> <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Lyons<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> took it even though he had dealings with the developer on a huge plot of land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The criticism of state Land Commissioner Pat Lyons\u2019 deal with a Las Cruces developer is continuing.
