The Army will move its 70th Engineering Battalion and reflag it as the WSMR 2nd Engineer Battalion in June of next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis move will be very good for the Army and WSMR,\u201d said U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, who serves on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. \u201cWhite Sands offers an ideal research and test facility for the Army and I have no doubt the military personnel who will be stationed there will be warmly welcomed by the entire region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RjkMs8C6y7I\/AAAAAAAACNY\/FPcWWFb01L8\/s1600-h\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RjkMs8C6y7I\/AAAAAAAACNY\/FPcWWFb01L8\/s200\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060089622499609522\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cThis is terrific news for <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">White<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Sands<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Missile<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Range<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. The people, assets and capabilities at WSMR are second to none and I am very glad the Army is tapping our world-class test facility to house this important battalion,\u201d U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move will involve $71 million in federal funds for site preparation, utility infrastructure and construction. It\u2019s expected to bring an estimated 145 families and 240 children to the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">White Sands currently has 460 military employees and about 2,550 civilian employees, in addition to about 3,220 contract employees.
