The powerhouse <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> firm represents more than 100 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2007\/full_list\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune 500<\/a> companies and has, at times, also represented states in litigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOur alliance with Patricia will drive our state AG practice to new heights,\u201d said Bernard Nash, head of Dickstein Shapiro\u2019s state attorneys general practice. \u201cPatricia was one of the most well-respected attorneys general in the country during her two terms. Her experience, judgment and credibility will enable us to better serve our clients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, a Democrat, said the job helps her stay visible and active, but it\u2019s also something she can leave immediately if she decides to run against U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., next year, which she\u2019s considering. The position, which involves travel around the nation, will allow her to keep living in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s extremely lucrative and I am a lawyer, first and foremost, so I am going to enjoy this very much,\u201d <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state>, who was one of the most visible attorneys general in the nation during her eight years in office, joined a number of her peers in lawsuits against massive corporations, bringing millions of dollars from settlements into <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. She said it won\u2019t be hard to now work on the other side of such cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs a lawyer, I have been trained to do every side of a particular debate,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it will be good to see the world from the business standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., last year and lost by 861 out of more than 211,000 votes. It was a bitter campaign, and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> took several months to rest after the loss. She is now also working on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards\u2019<\/a> presidential campaign as a member of his finance committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s clear that, through the Edwards\u2019 campaign and the new position, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is keeping her options open and trying to remain a visible, well-connected potential candidate. I asked how the new job will influence whether she runs against Domenici in 2008 or for governor in 2010, the other position she\u2019s considered seeking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt just depends on how much I like this. It depends on Domenici\u2019s polling. One thing I\u2019ve learned about politics over the years is many things happen that you don\u2019t expect,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I\u2019m still in politics. I\u2019m very busy on the Edwards campaign and traveling for that. That\u2019s certainly political and has a lot of potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I asked if a job with a potential Edwards\u2019 administration, if he\u2019s elected, is something she\u2019ll seek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI certainly don\u2019t expect it and that\u2019s not why I\u2019m doing this. I\u2019m doing this because I think he\u2019s the best man to be president,\u201d she said. \u201cBut that\u2019s a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She also said the new job could help a future political run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019ll be making new contacts all over the country with people who might want to support me in office,\u201d she said. \u201cIt does keep me on the national scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What people should see from her current work, she said, is that she\u2019s not one to be counted out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am a woman with a lot of energy and I\u2019m not ready to retire,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former state Attorney General Patricia Madrid has taken a position as a consultant for a firm that represents some of the companies she took to court on behalf of New Mexico\u2019s citizens during her time in office.
