\"\"<\/a>Another of Gov. Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> statements from last week\u2019s Democratic presidential candidate debate might come back to bite him. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

When each candidate was asked to name, without elaborating, their favorite Supreme Court justice, Richardson picked former Justice Byron \u201cWhizzer\u201d White<\/a>. When asked to name a living justice, he named Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The controversy comes from Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s career of strong statements in support of abortion rights. White was among the minority of justices who dissented from the 1973 opinion in Roe v. Wade<\/a> that legalized abortion, and Richardson\u2019s naming him has upset some Democrats.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:city> was asked about the choice during a campaign stop Saturday in San Diego<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. When told by a reporter that White opposed the landmark 1973 decision, Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said he thought the reporter was wrong.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

According to the Washington Times<\/a>, Richardson<\/st1:city> then said he chose White not because of his decisions, but because he was an all-American football player and was nominated by Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s hero, President Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking really fast,\u201d the Times quoted Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as saying.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:city> has been in Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> ever since. He stopped in Carson City<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Monday to talk about Western values. You can read about it from Nevada Appeal by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s scheduled to be in Nevada<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> today. He has no campaign events scheduled Wednesday and Friday, but plans to be the keynote speaker at the National Conference of Black Mayors<\/a> in Baton Rouge<\/st1:city>, La.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, on Thursday. The three Democratic frontrunners are also scheduled to speak at the five-day event.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

One more comment about the debate, and then I\u2019ll let it die: Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> refused to debate his gubernatorial opponent last year. He should have debated John Dendahl<\/a>, on television, and he should have done it as often as Dendahl was willing, which probably would have been repeatedly. Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> clearly needed the practice.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Getting stomped by Dendahl, which would have been the worst-case scenario, might have meant Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> got 65 percent of the vote instead of 69, but he probably would have done a lot better at last week\u2019s debate, having had recent, real-world practice against a skilled opponent.<\/p>\n

Update, 4:50 p.m.<\/p>\n

The Richardson campaign put out an amended schedule for the week announcing that the governor will be in New Hampshire on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to speak to a union convention and do a lot of meet-and-greets and grassroots campaigning.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

At this rate, we should expect Richardson<\/st1:City> to be in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> 2-3 days every two weeks.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Also, I know I said I was done with the debate, but I came across an article today that had quite a different perspective than mine. The article, published on the site Bloomberg.com<\/a>, was written by Kevin Hassett. He said Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> did better than anyone else and gave him a grade of \u201cA+.\u201d Hillary Clinton<\/a> had an \u201cA,\u201d and Hassett gave the next closest candidate a \u201cC.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wrote that Richardson<\/st1:City> was \u201cgenuine and tough, the kind of guy who could pull the troops out of Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> without looking wimpy.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Democratic primaries continue along the path they began last week, then Richardson<\/st1:City> is the only thing between Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> and coronation,\u201d Hassett wrote.<\/p>\n
