It was the lowest approval rating for the senior senator since at least May 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Now it\u2019s lower. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveyusa.com\/client\/PollReport.aspx?g=d6693599-b423-4cb3-9c0e-48287d4181a9\" target=\"_blank\">newest poll<\/a>, conducted April 13-15 and released Wednesday, has Domenici\u2019s approval rating at 54 percent, with 38 percent saying they disapprove of the job he\u2019s doing. The survey of 600 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By comparison, those surveyed gave U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., a 60 percent approval rating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One important factor in the poll is that, for the first time, Domenici\u2019s approval rating among Democrats has fallen below 50 percent. It was at 49 percent in the newest poll. Last month, it was at 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Support among Republicans also fell slightly in the past month, from 75 percent to 74 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But among independents, Domenici\u2019s approval rating took a significant dip in the last month, from 48 percent to 38 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The company\u2019s February survey, the last conducted before the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney scandal broke, had Domenici\u2019s overall approval rating at 64 percent. Among Republicans, he had a 79-percent approval rating that month. Among Democrats, he had a 62-percent approval rating, and 55 percent of independents approved of the job he was doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s still an ongoing inquiry by the Senate Ethics Committee into whether Domenici violated Senate rules in calling former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a> in October to inquire about an ongoing public corruption probe.
