{"id":16499,"date":"2010-04-26T15:02:52","date_gmt":"2010-04-26T21:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=16499"},"modified":"2010-04-26T17:27:31","modified_gmt":"2010-04-26T23:27:31","slug":"former-opponent-endorses-evans-in-prc-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/04\/former-opponent-endorses-evans-in-prc-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Former opponent endorses Evans in PRC race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_16500\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16500\" title=\"Evans, Kent\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Evans-Kent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kent Evans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tony Schaefer, who was disqualified from running for a seat on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmprc.state.nm.us\/\">Public Regulation Commission<\/a> earlier this month, has endorsed <a href=\"http:\/\/dkentevans.com\/\">Kent Evans<\/a> in the race for the seat he once sought.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Schaefer, himself a former PRC member and chairman, pledged his support for Evans today at a news conference in Mesilla. At that news conference, Evans announced that he\u2019s embracing a plan for cleaning up the scandal-plagued PRC drafted primarily by Schaefer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, it is apparent that it is not just the rules that need to be revised but the structure of the agency itself,\u201d states the action plan, which you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/Documents\/EvansPRCActionPlan.pdf\">here<\/a>. \u201cAfter twelve years of operation and four election cycles, the Commission has lost its regulatory focus and has little understanding of its authority and the role it plays as a member of a governmental team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans said in a phone interview that Schaefer\u2019s endorsement and the action plan will help him be a more effective commissioner.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTony, because of his experience and because of his time on the commission, can be a very good expert and brief me on the things I need to know,\u201d Evans said. \u201cWhen I get there in January of next year, I hope that, because of that and because of this action plan, I will be much more prepared to hold that office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schaefer could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Two of six Republicans who filed to run for the PRC District 5 seat, Schaefer and Doug Moore, were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/04\/primary-candidates-removed-from-the-ballot\/\">removed from the ballot<\/a> by district judges earlier this month because they didn\u2019t submit enough valid signatures on their nominating petitions.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges to their candidacies were filed by another of the four Republicans remaining in the GOP primary race, <a href=\"http:\/\/jamieestrada.com\/\">Jamie Estrada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Evans and Schaefer are both former Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 5:25 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Estrada had this to say:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Public Regulation Commission desperately needs\u00a0new and competent leadership.\u00a0The old and corrupt ways of doing business\u00a0in New Mexico isn\u2019t good enough because it hurts our ability to create new jobs and opportunities for future generations.\u00a0That Mr. Evans has accepted the endorsement of a former PRC Commissioner is no surprise.\u00a0What is surprising is that he is adopting and promoting the tired ideas of a politician who a district judge recently removed from the ballot.\u00a0For a clear idea of Mr. Evans\u2019 own \u201cAction Plan,\u201d I\u00a0would direct voters to the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g0CrQgAmIjw\" target=\"_blank\"><em>YouTube video<\/em><\/a><em> of Mr. Evans at a recent Valencia County political meeting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Tony Schaefer, who was disqualified from running for a seat on the Public Regulation Commission earlier this month, has endorsed Kent Evans in the race for the seat he once sought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11,1],"tags":[108,115,107],"class_list":["post-16499","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-and-analysis","category-uncategorized","tag-2010-election","tag-dona-ana-county","tag-roundhouse"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16499","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=16499"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16499\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=16499"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=16499"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=16499"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
