I\u2019m not going to report the entire event word-for-word, but I\u2019ll periodically update this site throughout the 90-minute event with observations and quotes. The newest updates will be at the end of this posting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then, later, I\u2019ll have an analysis of Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson\u2019s<\/a> performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can watch the debate live on MSNBC or the network\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Web site<\/a>. It begins at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 5:10 p.m. <\/span><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was the first to be introduced tonight by NBC News anchor Brian Williams and he appeared to be a bit caught off guard. The camera showed him looking off to the side with his mouth open as if he was in a slight daze. The next time the camera showed him, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had a serious look on is face as if he was about to meet with Saddam Hussein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 5:15 p.m. <\/span>Richardson said he would not have joined most Democrats in the House and Senate who have voted in the last few days to continue to fund the war but set a timeline for an Iraq pullout, if he was still in Congress. He said he favors the beginning of an immediate pullout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> looks highly caffeinated while he\u2019s speaking and is using a lot of hand gestures. He has a serious look on his face and is speaking intelligently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Overall, most of the Democrats are saying very similar things about what should be done in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 5:25 p.m.<\/span> The candidates are all being asked questions about ethical questions with their campaigns. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> had to explain a questionable donor, but spent more time talking about other donors to his campaign than that one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> was asked about whether his campaign against poverty is contradicted by his wealthy lifestyle and a $400 haircut his campaign recently purchased for him. Edwards said he is now \u201cblessed\u201d to live a wealthier lifestyle, but then told a story about having to leave a restaurant when he was a child because he father couldn\u2019t afford to pay the prices there and said he remembers what it was like to be poor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was asked about his statement last week he was hesitant to call for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales because he\u2019s Hispanic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat\u2019s how I felt,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said in response to being asked if ethnicity was a valid reason for making such a decision. He then changed the subject to talk about tangents, but he came back to the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think the American people want candor,\u201d he said. \u201cThey don\u2019t want blow-dried candidates who are perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Was that a shot at Edwards\u2019 haircut?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I should add that <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> has since called for Gonzales to resign. He said tonight that in addition to the Hispanic factor, he was waiting for Gonzales\u2019 testimony before Congress to decide whether he should resign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 5:31 p.m.<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravel2008.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gravel<\/a> just took a shot at basically every other Democrat running for president. He said all three top-tier candidates and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebiden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> frighten him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 5:45 p.m. <\/span>After being told he was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">NRA\u2019s<\/a> favorite presidential candidate from either party, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was asked if the recent shooting at Virginia Tech changed his stand on gun control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Of course, it gave <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> a chance to point out he\u2019s a Westerner. He then spoke intelligently about the need to treat the mentally ill and to implement instant background checks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He didn\u2019t really, however, answer the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He didn\u2019t really, however, answer the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 5:52 p.m. <\/span>On the topic of health care, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said he would allow no new bureaucracy in the system and attempt to deal with existing red tape, would focus on preventative health, and would \u201celiminate those in the middle like HMO and others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He breaks with most other Democratic candidates in proposing a health-care plan that doesn\u2019t involve a tax increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs Democrats I hope we don\u2019t think we always think of taxes to pay for new programs,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Williams has twice had to cut off <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> for refusing to stop talking when his time ran out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Update, 5:57 p.m.<\/span> Richardson said the most significant political mistake he\u2019s made in the last four years was trying to \u201cram\u201d a minimum wage increase through the Legislature in 2006 instead of using diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m impatient. I try to change institutions, my state, rapidly. I\u2019m too aggressive,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201c\u2026 I\u2019ve made a lot of mistakes. I\u2019m not perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The others all shared brief answers, too. Some spoke honestly about mistakes. Clinton, Edwards, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisdodd.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Dodd<\/a> and Biden took the opportunity to take shots at the president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6 p.m. <\/span><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> said the first thing he would try to accomplish during his first day in office would be to \u201cget us out of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> with diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the second day, he would push an \u201cApollo plan\u201d for energy independence, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:09 p.m. <\/span>Williams mentioned <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s extensive foreign policy experience. He then asked how the governor would deal with <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Russia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> said he wants <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Russia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> to control the nuclear weapons in its borders. He wants the nation to \u201cbe more humane in dealing with <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Chechnya<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d He wants it to help with energy and be a more stable force in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> got in his shot at Bush, saying \u201cbeing stubborn isn\u2019t a foreign policy.\u201d He then quickly laid out its foreign policy plan, and emphasized a need to care about Darfur and <st1:place st=\"on\">Africa<\/st1:place> in general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had to be cut off again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:17 p.m. <\/span>When asked if any of them supported <a href=\"http:\/\/kucinich.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dennis Kucinich\u2019s<\/a> proposal to impeach the vice president, none raised their hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kucinich said the vice president is preparing for war with <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iran<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMr. Cheney must be held accountable,\u201d Kucinich said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:24 p.m. <\/span>When asked about normalizing relations with Castro\u2019s <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Cuba<\/st1:country-region>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> instead answered a prior question asked of others about how he would respond to an attack on <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> cities, saying he would respond militarily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As for Castro, he then said the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> has to find ways to deal with a coming Democratic Cuba. He also said he would change some policies about family visits between Americans and Cubans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe reality is we should be planning for a post-Castro <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Cuba<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>,\u201d he said, stressing the need to reconsider the embargo and prepare to push Democracy there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:28 p.m. <\/span>Obama and Kucinich are arguing over using military force and nuclear weapons. They\u2019re going back and forth. Gravel is now taking a turn. Clinton, who is in between the three, is looking calm and cool and not jumping into what is an emotional fray.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This has been the only emotionally charged exchange of the debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:30 p.m.<\/span> Biden jumped in a few moments later and accused the peace-making Kucinich and Gravel of \u201chappy talk,\u201d saying war is sometimes justified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The debate is over. I\u2019ll have analysis later tonight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Update, 6:33 p.m. <\/span>While other candidates are being joined on stage by spouses, I don\u2019t see Barbara Richardson.
