Earl Greer<\/a> of T or C said today he will challenge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.org\/images\/NM\/GOPNM%20Bio1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Allen Weh<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to become chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Party of New Mexico<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Delegates will pick a new chair when they meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>. Rumors have circulated for weeks that Greer and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcgop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bernalillo County Republican Party<\/a> Chairman Fernando C de Baca might challenge Weh. I was unable to reach C de Baca for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But Greer confirmed he\u2019s running, saying his decision follows the repeated encouragement of a number of county party chairs throughout the state. He plans to make a formal announcement Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t anything against the current chair, Allen Weh,\u201d Greer said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a lot of consensus that we need some new direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In particular, Greer said, a number of county chairs were disappointed with the party\u2019s inability to capitalize on scandals involving state Democrats in the November election like Democrats did on national scandals involving Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat was a huge deal that just kept coming up with all the county chairs,\u201d Greer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ri_XMMC6yUI\/AAAAAAAACIg\/D0f3o6HqgzQ\/s1600-h\/Weh,+Allan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Ri_XMMC6yUI\/AAAAAAAACIg\/D0f3o6HqgzQ\/s200\/Weh,+Allan.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057497510952225090\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Weh said he learned of Greer\u2019s candidacy late this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Anybody can run for anything,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously, he\u2019s got friends. I\u2019ve got friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A Republican delegate who didn\u2019t want to be quoted by name on such a sensitive matter said he believes Weh will have the support to continue in the position. Though many Republicans were disappointed that they didn\u2019t capture any statewide seats from Democrats or gain any legislative seats last year, Weh is an excellent fundraiser, the source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And, he pointed out, Greer ran for Congress several years ago and the Public Regulation Commission last year and lost both times. In addition, he ran for a leadership position in the state party shortly after losing his congressional bid, and lost that, too. He hasn\u2019t proven that he can win anything, the Republican said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Greer said he\u2019s confident he has the votes to beat Weh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere are enough delegates and enough of the county chairs who have said they\u2019re with me and for me that I think we do,\u201d he said. \u201cBut, if nothing else, we\u2019re going to make sure some of our issues are addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Greer said he didn\u2019t announce sooner, despite rumors, because he \u201cwanted to make sure that this is what the grassroots want to happen\u201d and also because he didn\u2019t want a prolonged campaign that had the potential to get nasty and split the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ll have an article Thursday on the Democratic Party\u2019s state convention, which is being held in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>C.
