{"id":1617,"date":"2007-04-20T16:36:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-20T22:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/steinborn-mccamley-named-to-ethics-task-force\/"},"modified":"2007-04-20T16:36:00","modified_gmt":"2007-04-20T22:36:00","slug":"steinborn-mccamley-named-to-ethics-task-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/steinborn-mccamley-named-to-ethics-task-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Steinborn, McCamley named to ethics task force"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilBGD3FS1I\/AAAAAAAACFg\/Vd3wpqrmUhs\/s1600-h\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilBGD3FS1I\/AAAAAAAACFg\/Vd3wpqrmUhs\/s200\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055643629071453010\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will have significant representation on the ethics task force being reconvened by Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=321&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Steinborn<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, and Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district5\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> were both selected by the governor to serve on the 23-member task force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The appointments are big boosts for Steinborn, a freshman representative, and McCamley, who is running against U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., and is the only local government representative on the task force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/business.nmsu.edu\/facultystaff\/dean\/carruthers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Garrey Carruthers<\/a>, dean of <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype>\u2019s <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">College<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Business<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> and a former governor, will again co-chair the task force along with <a href=\"http:\/\/lawschool.unm.edu\/faculty\/scarnecchia\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Suellyn Scarnecchia<\/a>, dean of the University of New Mexico School of Law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilA-z3FSzI\/AAAAAAAACFQ\/lbnt0Czwmx0\/s1600-h\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilA-z3FSzI\/AAAAAAAACFQ\/lbnt0Czwmx0\/s200\/McCamley,+Bill.JPG\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055643504517401394\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Carruthers was the only member of last year\u2019s ethics task force from <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m tremendously honored that the governor would appoint me to this commission and think of me as a reformer,\u201d Steinborn said, adding that ethics reform \u201cwas a great piece of unfinished business from the session.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Last year\u2019s ethics task force made a number of recommendations that became bills backed by the governor in this year\u2019s session, but limitations on gifts to public officials and candidates for office and public financing of statewide judicial races were the only recommendations to be approved. The Senate was especially suspicious of any ethics reform proposed by the governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilBKT3FS2I\/AAAAAAAACFo\/_cOUMFRAUjI\/s1600-h\/Carruthers,+Garrey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RilBKT3FS2I\/AAAAAAAACFo\/_cOUMFRAUjI\/s200\/Carruthers,+Garrey.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055643702085897058\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The new task force is charged by <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> with examining the resistance to reform in the Legislature, coming up with new proposals and determining whether he should call a special session later this year to deal with ethics reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley, who teaches a government course at NMSU, said he talks with students about the fact that the United States is founded upon the principle that \u201cthe government has power, but in exchange for that power, they\u2019ve got to rule in the best interest of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat trust between the people and the government is the cornerstone of what makes <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> work,\u201d McCamley said. \u201cI\u2019m extremely grateful to the governor for giving me the opportunity to work on policy that will build trust between citizens and the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Steinborn gained status as a reformer when he helped work out a compromise this year on the proposal to remake the state\u2019s scandal-plagued housing authority system. McCamley, shortly after taking office in 2005, authored a rewrite of the county\u2019s ethics policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley\u2019s appointment is also noteworthy because it will increase his stature as he attempts to unseat Pearce. McCamley has been the champion of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a> in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename>, and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has repeatedly and publicly expressed gratitude for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, in a news release, noted that the task force consists of a mix of members of last year\u2019s group and new members who will bring a \u201cfresh perspective.\u201d The task force has a number of heavyweights that include Lt.Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a>, former U.S. Interior Secretary and Congressman <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stewart_Udall\" target=\"_blank\">Stewart Udall<\/a> and state Treasurer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">James B.
